Managing debt alone can be tough. Trying to decide which of your financial commitments are more or less important can be very stressful. Of course, any financial commitment is important, and failing to keep up with your payments could result in serious consequences.

How do I know if I need debt advice?
One important thing to remember is that not all debt is bad debt. Credit cards, overdrafts, personal loans and store cards are all forms of debt, and as long as they are used carefully, they should never pose a real problem.

The problems can occur when you have overspent, making it difficult to repay what you owe, or when unexpected costs crop up which make it more difficult to meet your debt repayments.

Ask yourself the following questions:

•    Have you missed any debt or bill payments in the last few months?
•    Are you near the limits of any of your credit facilities?
•    Do you frequently find yourself short of money towards the end of the month?

If you can answer ‘yes’ to one or more of the above, it’s likely that you could benefit from professional debt advice.

How can a debt adviser help?
When you first call your debt adviser, they will discuss your situation in confidence to help establish the kind of help you need.

It may well be that a few words of advice is all you need. Managing your finances can be a complex thing, and if you feel like you don’t understand how to manage your money, you are certainly not alone. A good debt adviser will be able to offer guidance on how to manage your finances and control your debts.
