Jet Power and the Birth of the Jet Aviation Age

June 9th, 2010

The invention of jet propulsion was ideal for fighter aircraft. Although at first it reduced range and endurance and often increased the take-off run. The German Messerschmitt Me 262 and the British Gloster Meteor twin jets saw action in 1944, together with the tailless Me 163 rocket interceptor which sacrificed range and endurance for astounding climb and speed in defending local areas against heavy bombers.

Germany was far in front of other countries in another factor too: armament. A range of 30 mm (1 inch) cannon, radically new high-speed cannon with multiple-revolver chambers, very large recoilless guns, spin-stabilised air-to-air rockets fired in salvoes, and wire-guided air-to-air missiles were all under test before the Luftwaffe s defeat. They gradually inspired similar developments in other countries: one German gun, the Mauser MG 213, led to the American Pontiac M-39, the French DEFA, the Russian NR-30, the Swiss Oerlikon KCA, and the British Aden, all of which are still in use.

Many early jet fighters were fitted into more or less conventional airframes. The fighter often considered the ultimate achievement of the piston era, the long-range North American P-51 Mustang appeared both in a twinned double-fuselage form and, with few changes, as a US Navy jet.

But the US Air Force decided to wait a year until its makers could sweep back the wings and tail at 35 degrees, which German research had shown could lead to higher speed. The result was the F-86 Sabre, which in 1948 set a speed record at 1,080 km/h (671 mph) and outflew all other fighters. Later versions carried radar and rockets and reached 1,150 km/h (715 mph).

During the Korean War (1950-3) the F-86 met a previously unknown machine built in the Soviet Union, the somewhat lighter and simpler MiG-15, and although the MiG could climb higher and had heavy cannon, the Sabre’s skilled pilots and better equipment gave it the edge in combat.

North American’s next fighter was the F-100 Super Sabre, which exceeded the speed of sound in level flight. The MiG bureau built the twin jet MiG-19, which was even faster, and is still in wide use. The US Air Force ordered various all-weather interceptors with largely automatic radar and flight control systems so that, with guided missiles, they could intercept and destroy enemy aircraft without the pilot ever seeing them.

The British ordered a jet-fighter flying-boat, but discovered that this way of doing business without airfields produced an inferior fighter. The Americans suffered similar problems with a ‘hydroski’ fighter, which could dive faster than sound, but took off and landed on retractable water skis.

Two even stranger fighters were designed around powerful turboprop engines and, standing on their tails, screwed themselves vertically into the air (they were intended to operate from the confined decks of warships or merchant vessels). Britain built high-altitude supersonic fighters with ‘mixed power’ from a turbojet and a rocket. In 1957 the British Minister of Defence suggested there would soon be no more manned fighters at all, only missiles. The Americans stuck to fighters, but made them very large and armed them with missiles, but no gun.

Today the wheel has turned full circle. In the past 10 to 20 years there has been a powerful wish to get back to the ‘eyeball-to-eyeball’ type of confrontation of the man in the Sopwith Camel. The pre-eminent Western fighter, the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom, was rebuilt with an internal gun, a rapid-fire 20 mm (0.79 in) cannon with six barrels firing up to 6,000 rds/ min, and a slatted wing to pull tighter turns in combat.

New small fighters appeared, such as the General Dynamics F-16, which, although bigger and heavier than any single-engined fighters of World War II, are nevertheless small and light by comparison with such impressive machines as the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle, and MiG-25 Foxbat, The RAF’s next interceptor, the ADV (Air-Defence Version) of the Panavia Tornado, is a careful midway compromise, smaller than the three monsters just listed, but with two engines, long range, powerful radar, and extremely effective Skyflash missiles.

Modern interceptors defend vast blocks of airspace up to 160 km (100 miles) in radius, with powerful radar able to look down at the surrounding land and water and spot low-flying intruders trying to slip through the defences unnoticed. Their task is eased by the presence of special surveillance, early-warning, and AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft, with enormous radars and sophisticated command and control systems to manage all a nation’s defences in the most efficient way.

There is no better feeling than being in the cockpit during your jet fighter flight. Jet fighter flights and jet fighter joy flights are the ultimate gift giving and receiving experience that will be remembered forever. Your jet fighter pilot experience is available in Melbourne, Cairns and Townsville. Visit flyingwarbirds.com.au for more details. For mini bus hire Brisbane, contact Group 1 Minibus.

Intense Pulsed Light Photorejuvenation

June 7th, 2010

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) or photorejuvenation therapy is a light based technology which treats several skin conditions in one treatment.

It works in the deeper layers of the skin where traditional skincare cannot reach, thus achieving a far superior result in a shorter time frame.

Skin concerns such as pigmentation, freckling, sun damage, capillaries, redness, acne scarring and rosacea may be treated with photorejuvenation.

Pulses of light are applied to the skin either in single zone or more commonly over the whole area to provide a uniform result.

The treatments remove most types of sun induced pigmentation like freckling, age spots and sun damage. By lessening the darker pigmentation IPL leaves the skin with a more even tone.

Vascular skin concerns including capillaries, redness, acne scarring and rosacea are also targeted by the broad wavelengths of light.

As most people will have several skin concerns, this treatment has become popular as it can address them all. The IPL photorejuvenation also stimulates the production of collagen which will plump and smooth the texture of the skin, improving fine lines, wrinkles and pitted scarring.

The most common treatment areas are face, neck, décolletage/chest area and backs of hands.

There is little or no downtime involved with photorejuvenation. Most people will experience some redness and heat in the area which subsides in several hours after treatment.

The darker areas of pigment may form tiny ‘pigment crusts’ which lift off in a few days revealing the result underneath. As the skin is not broken or damaged it is fine to wear make-up, though exfoliation via mechanical scrubs and AHA/glycolics is to be avoided for a week after the IPL treatment.

IPL Photorejuvenation treatments can be utilised as a once off treatment, however a course of treatments will promote the best results.

A progressive result can be expected with a change usually noticed within a week after a session. It is of utmost importance to wear sunscreen in between and after treatments as most of the damage on skin is caused by UV exposure and to prolong the result from the IPL photorejuvenation this is essential.

The Important Role of the Receptionist

June 5th, 2010

Your phone has been ringing all morning. You’re trying to get a report out and people have been constantly walking in and out of your office, it’s like a railway station! You’re exhausted - and it’s only 11.00am!

Spare a thought for your receptionist. This is what most receptionists put up with every day.

The role of the receptionist was once as simple as answering phones and attending to personal visitors. Now the definition of a receptionist is more accurately stated as someone who answers the phone, greets people in person, does 25 things at once, and is continually interrupted.

At any one time a receptionist might be on the phone, holding two calls, tending to a personal client and calling a cab, all while putting together the minutes from yesterday’s staff meeting.

The role of the receptionist is sometimes looked upon as a lowly position, by the public, co-workers, management and receptionists themselves. The attitude is - “It’s just reception, how complicated can it be?”

A survey conducted by Reception Plus found that 63% of receptionists do not feel valued or appreciated. They feel isolated and their efforts unacknowledged in many cases.

How can you ensure that anyone calling or coming in to reception will feel comfortable and likely to conduct business with you? The answer is motivation, encouragement and appreciation of the person at your front desk.

Your marketing and sales personnel promote the advantages of using your services. If people making contact feel they’re treated poorly or even rudely, they may choose to seek out your competitors rather than repeat a disappointing experience. I know I would.

The majority of receptionists are proactive, efficient and welcoming. They care about their clients and it is obvious; they make people feel welcome and relaxed; they’re helpful, but not condescending; in control, but not over-bearing; friendly but not unprofessional.

If your receptionist is like this, let him or her know that you appreciate their approach and contribution to the smooth running of the organisation.

It may be by simply remembering to acknowledge them as you enter the office, returning their smile, using your manners, asking their opinion, even making them a coffee.

On the other hand, your receptionist may be showing signs of being a little challenged, finding it difficult to know how to respond to various people and situations, and to manage several things at once. Don’t leave them to struggle. Seek out options for training and encouragement.

Reception is very similar to customer service. The requirements are the same: a positive attitude, confidence, assertiveness, good communication, people and telephone skills, politeness, efficiency, willingness to help, ability to handle multiple tasks, and a sound knowledge of the company procedures and services. These attributes can all be learned by a willing participant.

Looking for a receptionist course? Receptionist training is one of the best investments you can make for your business. Reception Plus conducts professional receptionist seminars throughout Australia. Check their website for locations and dates.

Transparency is the best customer policy

May 28th, 2010

If you are charging your expertise and your time for a living you know how disconcerting it can be for a client to receive their bill. How can they have the assurance that what they are being charged for is value for money? How can they be re-assured that their invoice is a proper account of work actually performed?

The answer is to let them know what is happening. Instead of waiting four weeks to cause them to fall off their chair when they finally get your invoice why not giving them real-time access to your timesheets? Scary thought? Not really. Either you are tweaking the real hours you spent on that job or your hourly rate is too high because you don t want to reveal how long you actually spent on this task.

People simply like to be told the truth and if you spent 10 hours on a job and are only charging 5 that is to be documented. If the senior partner could have done the job in two hours at a top hourly rate but a new graduate staff took twice as long at bottom price it is worth letting the client know.

Some IT providers are so nervous about their charging issues that they send their staff to work on location when they might as well have performed their task remotely from the office with peer review. The idea is that if the client sees our people at their premises they will have some good subliminal feeling that we are really working on their job.

Baloney! Who do you think you are kidding? Trust is lacking here. The best way to clear the air about justifying your time and your rates as a provider is to be pro-active by providing the logs of who did what and where. LogBook is such an online billing application where your clients can see your timesheets. Later they can also see how much time was charged and at what rate. They can see if the project is still under budget or not. You might have agreed that the job will not cost more than x dollars and that any overtime will be borne by you. You might also charge hardware components or software subscriptions as part of your service.

When is it better to deal with a one-man band than a juggernaut?

May 28th, 2010

In corporate life size matters. You ve heard the phrase When our legal team has talked with your legal team we will release our proposal . In other words those guys are spending their time looking for whatever can go wrong. When you focus on something you will eventually find it.

Enters a new attribute in business ethics: trust. Do you realise than in the old days people would perform a real-estate transaction on a handshake? Without going to this extreme the case has to be made that trust and loyalty today are in short supply. Those who can demonstrate these values will gain a lot of kudos.

So how do you state your credentials with people who don t know you? Simple, let someone else do the talking. Referral business leads are the best form of advertising. Satisfied customers will brag about their purchase with the people they know.

The issue is that people don t take the time to get to know those they want to do business with. It s kind of hard to have a business lunch with a business partner when you are about to subcontract a job in cyberspace. Would you talk to them on Skype? Would you check out their Facebook page, their blog, follow them on Twitter?

Dealing with one person has always been and always will be. They are scores of consultants who once navigated the corporate corridors and are now doing fine for themselves thank you very much.

Dealing with an individual helps with poor communication. Since you are dealing with one individual you only need to tell your story once and can spend more time putting emphasis where needed. Since communication is a two way street you can afford to hear out just one person rather than being drowned in corporate cacophony.

Finally you will have made a new friend not just some business contact but someone who knows you, who understands you and who has done something worthwhile for you. Someone you can trust.

Algorithmic Trading Strategies in several markets

May 27th, 2010

What can you gain from an automated trading system? Is it any better than tossing a coin? Contrary to common belief a computerised trading system based solely on technical analysis can spot a reliable number of good trades

How can that be? First of all let s be selective. Not all instruments that you find to trade are profitable. That s in fact a bonus because you have a limited amount of capital to trade with therefore you have to be quite specific about what you choose. Individual stocks especially those with a small capitalization are to be left alone unless you have insider knowledge. Indices and very large stocks behave well under the scrutiny of technical analysis. Even better still futures are found to be the best. Recently a rare metal such as platinum provided close to 100% returns in just 9 months. Imagine doubling your money in one year. (We re talking about April 2010 here).

A trading robot doesn t care about a company balance sheet (or what is left of it after the creative accountants have done their magic on it.) As the old saying goes: Everything you need to know is already factored in the price! An automated trading system doesn t fidget whether or not to be in or out of the market. It is constantly in the market reversing from long to short and back again. It does not give in to market emotions but it does take advantage of big swings in the market by being bold enough to change position early in a move.

You might think such a trading robot is the prerogative of big hedge funds who can afford to hire hordes of computer geeks. Not so. There is such a system available for a small subscription fee. Trading Pal publishes their results daily. It operates on a 9 months rolling window of data. For each instrument traded a chart and a log of trades with a tally of profits and losses is available.

Even though there is still quite a choice of instruments to choose from people tend to trade in an industry or market they know about. They mentally recall the last high or the last low over the last 6 months. Nevertheless comparing your own trades with what Trading Pal came up with can be quite a wake up call to the shortcomings of your own ad-hoc method (If you can call it that when all you do is give in to your emotions.)

Online bookkeeping is now

May 27th, 2010

Doing your accounting on the net? What a novel idea! What would cause people to do that?

In an ever mobile society where being in touch is more important than where you are, online accounting does make sense and is in fact filling a gap.

Having access to your records regardless of where you are can save you an embarrassing situation if you default on a payment because you couldn t remember the date or the amount.

If you operate a business or an association there could be a need for several people to update receipts and expenses from different locations in a timely fashion. Setting up a virtual network and deploying some elaborate software can be time wasting and expensive. These features are a given with an internet-based application.

Internet bookkeeping deals with several levels of threats like hard disk failure, a stolen laptop, computer viruses and so on. If you use the internet for internet banking the next logical step is to use the internet to reach your accounting records even from an iPhone.

This concept feeds into the overall idea of cloud computing where people no longer want to maintain their own PC operations but instead shift to farms of dedicated servers with backup storage and non-stop power supplies.

Curiously for those of us old enough to have been using computers in the 1970 s that is where it all started from! In those days all you had was a terminal hooked up to a mainframe. Then in the 1980s the IBM PC revolution hit. People asked for more and more flexibility in their reports and were re-manipulating their information in a Lotus 123 spreadsheet. It looks like after 40 years we have gone full circle history has a habit of repeating itself.

Aside from what the pundits are trying to tell us the marketing emphasis is this: just like instant coffee and microwave ovens - It s all about convenience. If you use the net to check the news, download music, read your email, send your resume and whatever else, the next logical steps is to use it to keep your financial records also.

What about privacy? Many services use your email address as identification. They send you your password to that address to make sure it is not a bogus token but indeed can reach you. Apart from that one point of contact they know absolutely nothing about you neither do they want to. You can change your email address at will.

How serious are you about reaching your goals?

May 27th, 2010

If you haven t set any goals and are cruising through life nonchalantly you won t be disappointed. As the saying goes: Blessed are those who aim for nothing for they shall not be disappointed .

Does that mean that life is a mad race? It s all a matter of balance. How do you know if you are making progress or falling behind if you don t have a yardstick to go by?

It s not just those who are trapped in an addictive cycle who suffer from the failure to set clear and achievable goals it s also all of us who fail to make a commitment to ourselves to see to it that our circumstances do change for the better.

Now I am going to spring a dirty word on you ready? It s called discipline! The bad news is that unless you set boundaries around your life you are going nowhere fast. The good news is that if you manage to rein-in the rebel within you, you will go places.

So how do you make it happen? May I suggest you have a good look at this goal achievement resource. It is your life coach website where you can document what you want to do. More importantly it will be your standard of achievement where you can measure your progress. Where you spend your time and money tells me a lot about your commitment to reach your goals. Having to keep a record of where you spend each of those precious items will cause you to discover a few things about yourself.

Two consequences of this disciplined approach is that you will start planning your week ahead (managing your time) and making a budget (managing your money). Welcome to the real world! Life is a fight. Life is a challenge. Life is an obstacle course. Don t just start the race finish the race! Bad things happen to good people for no fault of their own. Turn your back on the past. Unlearn bad habits caused by your past failures and take stock of your potential. If you don t start trusting in yourself who will? You hold the keys to your future no matter your age, your looks, your education, etc

If life is a challenge then what is worth fighting for? Unless you are sold out on achieving your goals your energy will wane at the first obstacle. Expect difficulties they are part of life. If you have setbacks it only means one thing: you are alive and it s up to you to discover ways to get where you want to be.

Learn from children. Nobody told them; It can t be done. They dream and role play through games all day long. They act out and verbalise what is in their imagination.

Rediscover the child you once were and realise your dream.
