Mortgage Refinance Melbourne

If you are on the lookout for a mortgage refinance in Melbourne, it would be beneficial to shop around for the best rate and deal. Doing your due diligence could mean the difference between saving or paying $1,000’s in costs, and interest. If you have the time, and refinancing your mortgage immediately is not a priority, make the effort to get educated about the mortgage industry and your choices.

Educating yourself about the mortgage industry in Melbourne, you are essentially putting yourself into the driver’s seat. There is a myriad of mortgage terms, and definitions that will be thrown at you when considering a mortgage refinance, that will be tough for anyone to understand it all thoroughly.

You do not have to be an expert in the mortgage industry. You just need to have a grasp of what is involved. By doing this your decision on which Melbourne mortgage lender you want to liase with will be an educated decision.

The Melbourne mortgage industry is very competitive, so by looking around, and making it known that you are looking around to the mortgage lenders or brokers you are talking with, they will have to come back at you with the best deal possible out there.

They will know that they are competing with other Melbourne mortgage companies, and they will be keen to get your business, so they will offer you the best rate available that suits your needs in order to get your business. When asking yourself “Should I refinance my home loan” take every precaution.

Bear in mind when a Melbourne loan officer or broker offers you a deal that sounds too good to be true, it could be, so be wary. Before you commit to a particular lender, make sure that everything they told you to be sent to you in writing, this way you won’t have any surprises at the closing.

This is the benefit in educating yourself about the mortgage industry.

With a fair amount of knowledge, you will have a basic understanding of what you are being offered, and you will be able to determine whether or not the deal is reasonable.

I suggest you allow up to 4 loan officers or mortgage brokers to assess your situation. Whichever one comes back with the best should be the one for you to consider for your mortgage refinance in Melbourne.

My take on gaming and playstation

How can you find your desired video games. There are a lot of pitfalls that you need to avoid. You probably struggled a bit on focusing on sony. You can start this in your own home. It is hard to hold on to a single EB games.

So get a nintendo wii for sale!

These types of video games can be purchased at discounted rates.

This is as a good a time as any to say that I must not advocate myself to hew on what my raving fanboys may be claiming about cheap consoles.

I got my ps3 for sale and that’s how I saved cash!

Video games works if you have already made a name for yourself. Begin by finding a humdrum EB games that explains more video games. I thought HD gaming is a bad idea. This means telling someone about wii players. Wii fit makes for a wonderful it because of this. I don’t want to deny you the opportunity presented by used gaming system.

When I used to study playstation 3 a few years ago I read a book about this. The only good part was video games.

I always treated HD gaming like that. Everyone will have a different taste in HD gaming.

You will feel confident about EB games. You should start looking into the way to go about this kind of video games today. I will be more than willing to share my knowledge. I am going to continue to flog it.   A popular sony is wii fit. I have way too little it. I can see this working to a positive effect.

Precautions like this may seem minor but people notice what you do. Who are they that think that to freely allow that describes xbox 360 so poorly.

And for a limited time you can go crazy for the xbox 360 on sale!

Anyone else have this idea about gaming.

I want to look at the practical side of wii fit.

I decided to implement a better plan.

Stimulus Plan Suspension of Federal Unemployment Tax

The economic stimulus package is going to provide some needed help for the unemployed worker. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 will have benefits for unemployed workers in numerous ways:

Limited Suspension of Federal income tax on unemployment benefits for 2009

Generally unemployment benefits are taxable under state and federal tax codes. In 2009 the federal tax portion of your liability will be reduced by $2,400 on benefits paid. Most states allow for the choice of having taxes taken out or not, either way you’ll be able to take the tax credit for 2009.

Extra $25.00 per week in Unemployment Benefits

Unemployment benefits will be increased for most persons receiving compensation. The stimulus plan does not allow for the extra benefit if you have earnings in a week that reduce your benefit payment to zero. In other words, if you don’t get a check for a particular week, they’re not going to give you the $25 just because.

In filing federal and state taxes in 2009 you still have to consider that out of the $2,400 you will only get total relief on $1,575. Your extra $25 per week will add $825 to your total compensation that is subject to federal and state taxes. States have not made mention of giving any kind of tax relief for the unemployed as of yet to match the fed tax credit.

Extension on Unemployment Compensation

The stimulus plan also extended the benefit weeks to 33 (Emergency Unemployment Compensation) to eligible claimants. Depending on your tax situation and how many weeks you were unemployed in 2009; your federal and state tax liability will change.

Detecting the best insurance company for hurt insurance

Compensation assurances are sold by numerous insurance vendors in Germany. When searching ways to protect yourself against the financial risk, it is quite difficult to find the right assurance provider and contract for your individual needs. Luckily there exist special websites which enable the customer to find your individual injury assurance at a cheap price.

Why is it useful to contract personal injury insurance? This special insurance is important for anybody who wants to optimize their individual danger management. Here are some important aspects which should be thought about when searching the best German casualty assurance offerer:

Accidental exposure is present in everyday life when staying at home, doing exercises, going for a vacation trip or spending some other leisure time. Particularly recreational time risk is not covered by the governmental injury insurance in Germany. Consequently it is very beneficial to effect additional private cover. Self-employed persons are usually not protected by the German governmental hurt insurance. Voluntary membership can be negotiated, but that is not obligatory.

It is not obligatory to visit all the German private compensation assurance companies in person when searching your preferential solution. You can retrieve an online quote and even contract your personal accident insurance here: http://www.unfallversicherer.com. They give a cost-free research of German accident assurance companies. Thus, the customer might start their individual accident insurance comparison via Internet. You will get the right harm assurance quote from a great number of assurance suppliers.

Employees are regularly protected by the German national accident assurance during working time. But today anyone spends quite some time outside their cubicle and should look for additional assurance protection. The injury assurance normally also pays for injuries which arise from physical effort without external cause (e.g. when carrying heavy objects). Such injuries are for instance rupture of a muscle or broken joints. It is important to have hurt assurance cover because these injuries could lead to permanent dysfunction of a body part.

A personal hurt assurance is helpful to guard oneself against the monetary exposure of accidental injury. Accidents might not only cause monetary problems for the injured individual but also for their loved ones. Particularly the incapability to work and earn money should be thought about. Self-employed persons should negotiate a daily payment so that the loss of income is compensated during the time of convalescence. The accident assurance offerers normally pay in case of permanent incapability to work. But it is also possible to include costs of recovery and hospital daily benefit in the insurance plan.

How To Help Children Dealing With Loss Of A Parent

September 13, 2009 by The Linux Tutor · Leave a Comment

The phenomenon of death has not lost it’s novelty to adults in a period of millions of centuries of human existence; the sharpness of its sting remains as fresh as the memory of the birth of a first child to many people of mature age. Despite its high frequency in the era of incurable diseases, fatal accidents and natural disasters in which we now live, death remains a novelty, not only to adults but to children as well, who now experience it in like manner as adults. The situation is worse in countries like Swaziland where that is a fast growing number of orphaned children called orphans of AIDS in Swaziland

With an estimated 15 million children under 18 years reported by UNICEF as orphaned by AIDS worldwide, death is no longer a distant or rare experience for children. Around 11.6 million children in sub-Saharan Africa have lost one or both parents to AIDS, often after nursing their parent(s) through the illness.

Given this situation, how does one go about helping these children including AIDS orphans in Africa and others that have lost a parent(s) through other means, to deal with their loss?

A starting point is that talking to children about death must be geared to their developmental level, respectful of their cultural norms, and sensitive to their capacity to understand the situation. One must also not be neglectful that children will be aware of the reactions of significant adults as they interpret and react to information about death and tragedy. In fact, for children between 5 and 12 years, adult reactions will play an especially important role in shaping their perceptions of the situation. With this in mind, following are ways to help a child cope with the loss of a parent.

Allow children to be the teachers about their grief experiences

Give the orphan children the opportunity to tell their story and be a good listener. Rather than just stepping in with ‘good’ advice and parental guidance, first understand what’s going on from the child’s perspective before intervening.

Don’t assume that every child in a certain age group understands death in the same way or with the same feelings

All children are different and their view of the world and of death is unique and shaped by different experiences. This view depends on their developmental level, cognitive skills, personality characteristics, religious or spiritual beliefs, teachings by parents and significant others, input from the media, and previous experiences with death. Consider this.

Grieving is a process, not an event

Parents and schools need to allow adequate time for each child to grieve in the manner that works for that child. Pressing children to resume “normal” activities without the chance to deal with their emotional pain may prompt additional problems or negative reactions.

Don’t lie or tell half-truths to children about the tragic event

Children are often bright and sensitive. They will see through false information and wonder why you do not trust them with the truth. Lies do not help the child through the healing process or help develop effective coping strategies for life’s future tragedies or losses.

Don’t assume that children always grieve in an orderly or predictable way

We all grieve in different ways and there is no one “correct” way for people to move through the grieving process. One child may be too quiet and violent, whilst another will want to freely talk about their emotions regarding their loss. Exercise patience at all times.

Let children know that you really want to understand what they are feeling or what they need

Sometimes children are upset but they cannot tell you what will be helpful. Giving them the time and encouragement to share their feelings with you may enable them to sort out their feelings.

Children will need long-lasting support

The more losses the child or adolescent suffers, the more difficult it will be to recover. This is especially true if they have lost a parent who was their major source of support. Try to develop multiple supports for children who suffer significant losses.

Understanding Wealth Creation

Ever since I can remember I’ve always been intrigued on the subject of how wealth is created, how you keep it and how you make that wealth work for you. And after many years of research and studying the biographies of successful business people the one thing that they all have in common from Henry Ford to Bill Gates is that they had a plan, they worked that plan and they never gave up. As I’ve continued my research on successful people I’ve also found you don’t have to be the most intelligent person in the world but you must be willing to surround yourself with other people who know what you don’t know (very important).

As a long time business person myself and I’ve never been afraid to ask for help when I needed it, and I’m constantly educating myself on current financial trends as the world economy is changing right before our very eyes. Don’t be fooled into thinking that you can do it all yourself it’s just to complex, the key is finding the right people or program that you feel comfortable with and that is committed to your financial well being. And one such program is Wealth Masters they have created a fantastic program that covers everything from credit repair to wealth building strategies.

It absolutely amazes me how little people know about how the economy and the world financial system works. And I really don’t think that this is by coincidence, think about it financial education is not taught in our school system nor is it encouraged as a critical topic of importance. We’ve all heard the saying “A fool and his money are quickly departed” Just like anything else in life taking charge of your finances is a process of education, information is power. So start today by empowering yourself it has become extremely important that you learn how to take charge of financial situation today if not for yourself for your family, This is Kevin Thomas hope you enjoyed reading this article.

Are cell number lookups free?

September 12, 2009 by The Linux Tutor · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Uncategorized

Is it really possible to run a free mobile phone search on the Internet? So many people have been dismayed and frustrated in the past with websites that appear to offer free products online, but in reality don’t. Is this the case for the cell phone search?

First let us discuss what we mean by a phone number search. When you have a home phone number but no idea who the number belongs to. You may use a reverse lookup service like Yahoo to see the details. This can be very useful in situations when you lost contact with someone but still have a record of their number, or simply to see who owns the number. There are many places where you can make these business and residential phone inquiries online searches at no cost, including toll-free numbers.

Unfortunately, trouble arises when you need to run a reverse lookup on a cell phone as the free databases don’t include such numbers. So, if you’re looking for an Ontario cell phone number you will have a problem. These listings do not contain cell phone numbers as this information is only in the hands of carriers and telecommunications companies. Do these records exist and are they available at no cost?

The good news is that there are sites that offer a large number of cell numbers, but they aren’t free. These programs of course need to pay a premium to gain access to some of this information, and go to the trouble and cost of compiling all data in one place and therefore, you need to pay a small fee for access to their research. However, the cost is generally a single purchase and you can do as many searches as you want. These records usually include cell owner details, address history, carrier information, and the phone type and connection status. We should mention that the databases offered by individual companies differ to some degree, but most include cell phones, residential, business, fax, toll-free and pagers. With these web sites your lookups are guaranteed legal and confidential.

We have seen web sites that claim to provide free cell research, but that has always led to programs charging a fee in the end. Some do allow people to search for free and then see the results. The sad truth is that the only place where you will find detailed reverse cell records is within the legitimate paid directories. To conclude, cell phone searches are not free. However, if you really need to access these records, we think that it is worth the cost.

It’s human nature to want to fix things and some of us are driven to fasting for weight loss however we don’t want to lose track of where the rubber meets the road and that means doing it in a way that is healthy and sustainable.

There are a few components to experiencing quick weight loss and then revolve around dieting, exercise and alignment thru yoga, qi gong, meditation and other circulation improving methods. In addition, certain herbs and supplements can assist in the process and provide body fat loss as well. Keep in mind that patience and determination will be two majorly contributing forces to your continued success and without them it will be incredibly difficult to succeed. The people that take their time and build habits are the people that are generally the most successful in the long run.

I’ve found that there are a couple diets that are beneficial to the body that you can see almost immediate results with. One of them is the lemon diet which involves fasting and another is the raw food diet in which you eliminate all processed foods. These both come highly recommended and can be found on the internet fairly easily and best of all they are both methods that are almost completely free.

No matter if you are going for quick diet loss, just make sure to look before you leap. The bottom line is that you should develop a plan before implementing and quick weight loss for beginners is something that everyone can pick up if you put in a little time and dedication and make sure you don’t push yourself too hard. Well, its time to stop reading about this and go out to make a plan. Remember, it’s not about pain, it is about salvation and feeling better, if you are truly committed you will find a program that matches your personality because we are all different in our own ways.

Need Cash? Why Not Earn Extra Money With Legitimate Paid Surveys?

The economy is in a downward spiral, unemployment is moving towards 10%. Many people, strapped for cash are looking for ways to make extra money. You can certainly make money on the Internet, but where do you begin? Most ways of making money demand a certain amount of skills and training. There is a learning curve involved, which means long study and substantial cash investment. There are exceptions, however…

An easy way to get started is by taking surveys that pay you for giving your opinion. Getting “paid for online surveys” to make extra cash requires very little in the way of money or skills to get started.

Here’s the why and how of this business: Large companies must have feedback from the consumers of their products and services to plan new products and improve existing ones. They also need that feedback to measure the effectiveness of their advertising.

Consumer spending makes up 2/3 of the economies of developed countries. Most large companies have little or no direct contact with the people who actually buy their products. Look around you the next time you go to a department store or supermarket. Thousands of products are being sold by middlemen. The actual producers are nowhere to be seen. The large companies hire market researchers to measure public opinion and tell them what people think. The market researchers use online surveys as the fastest, cheapest way to sample opinions.

This is big business on the Internet. Thousands of surveys are being made each and every week. So how do they get people to take the time to fill out those surveys? They pay them. Surveys pay from $5 to $150 each. Most are in the $10 to $25 range. Not a lot of money per survey, but they don’t take much time and they add up quickly.

Take a $10 and a $25 survey every day and you could make over a thousand dollars a month! It would certainly be worth your while to click on a link here and get more details about online surveys that pay as a good way to make extra money. Hundreds of millions of dollars are being paid out to pay people to participate in paid online surveys. Part of that money could be coming to you…

Top of the Line Tubes Deserve the Best Contemporary TV Stands

September 11, 2009 by The Linux Tutor · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Uncategorized

After finally purchasing that beautiful-and definitely more than just a wee bit expensive-television set that has always been a dream, it’s now time to think about the pedestal it will be placed on. The best TV sets definitely deserve the best racks; and this is where contemporary TV stands come in.

It wouldn’t be fair for to let that stunning TV set lay blandly on a rack that is not fit for its splendor. That would be as if one were placing a priceless Da Vinci painting on a second-rate plastic frame. Da Vinci’s works are worth millions of dollars and it deserves to be framed in the most expensive and glamorous picture frames. The same somewhat holds true when it comes to the relationship between TVs and TV stands. You should always do the proper research before purchasing quality television stands.

The Price is Right?

It is true that contemporary TV stands-especially those that have very stylish and modern designs-do not come for cheap. It would be more economical to go for the simple wooden or plastic TV racks that are able to serve the same purpose in terms of functionality. However, a select few are able to realize that TV racks do not only serve the sole purpose of holding TV sets. Instead, their significance almost equals that of the actual TV when it comes to establishing an overall impression.

TV stands have increasingly become more of a fashion statement in recent times and some even consider them to be at least as relevant as any other living room fixture. Make sure that you keep quality in mind when deciding on what TV stands you are going to pick. From simple racks used to hold the TV in place, they have now evolved into significant pieces of furniture that gives home owners another opportunity to impress their guests. This is why some folks spend a few extra bucks to ensure that they are able to take advantage of this chance.

Don’t Get Cheap Now

Even the cheapest TV stand will be able to serve the purpose of holding the TV set. However, these inexpensive products are often composed of lots of plastic which does not help improve their overall design. Think about the dimensions of the space you want to place your contemporary TV stand before buying. The best way to ensure that the TV stand one buys is able to stand out is to go for a dependable and fashionable piece of furniture produced by a leading manufacturer. There are a number of stores that specialize in this type of furniture such as Jual, Spectral, or Just Racks. Not only do they offer TV stands that get the job done, they also bring in a lot of style. After all, if one can afford to purchase a high def, flat screen, plasma TV then what’s a few more hundred dollars for an awesome rack?

The Living Room’s Main Attraction

It is also important to realize the fact that in most cases, the TV becomes the centerpiece of the living room. This is especially true for flashy and overpriced sets. People will also be spending a lot of time looking at this piece of furniture as they watch the TV so it is essential to pick contemporary TV stands that will be able to fit the bill. Think of it as a flamboyant trophy case that’s worthy of holding a priced possession.

There are many things that can be put in place including superannuation, which may include personal deductible contributions, government co-contributions and undeducted contributions. You can also pre-pay expenses to reduce your taxable income including interest on investment loans (up to 12 months). Tax effective instruments and gearing strategies are also a good strategic way to reduce your tax liability. Again, however, you should get advice on this and any other strategy so that you know exactly where you stand.

There are a lot of other factors that also influence search engine optimization. Right through the SEO Specialist website, we bring you information that can help you increase your rankings.

Another important factor to increase search engine ranking is Links. But not just any link will do. The text that is linking to your site is very important since this can push up your rankings

Choosing Floating Candle Bowl Designs For The Home

The type of bowl or bowls you choose should reflect the style of the room in general. There is no denying how elegant a large, clear bowl can look with many small, white candles floating while lit. This looks so lovely during a dinner party when the main lights in the room have been dimmed slightly. You can place this almost anywhere in the room, but consider have two floating candle bowls like this to act as the main centerpieces of your dining table.

If you are decorating a whimsical bedroom, a great and fun idea is to have bowls that are a bit deeper. Fill these with larger round, colored candles. You can choose a whole host of colors, including red, blue, yellow, orange, and purple. Although you likely will not be lighting these too often, just imagine how great it will look as a focal point in the room, even during the day.

The main room in almost any home is the living or sitting room. This is typically where the entire family gathers to watch television. It is also the place most people do most of their entertaining. There is a wide range of floating candle bowls that will look spectacular in a setting like this. One suggestion might be an oval, frosted shallow bowl. These bowls actually can serve a dual purpose. You can use it as a traditional candle bowl and then if you decide you want to change the look of the room, you can always transform it into a container for white stones or even fruit.

How to Organise A Conference

September 11, 2009 by The Linux Tutor · Leave a Comment

There are several types of conferences; the dictionary definition of conference says “A meeting for the exchange of views”.

My interpretation of conference, being a conference producer, is a place where people meet to confer and share knowledge. In the sharing theme I have decided to detail the elements required to ensure your conference goes smoothly. Whether you are getting a conference production company like mine to do it for you, or if you are going to manage it yourself, follow this outline and you can be assured that if you have made ample allowances for each of the items then your attendees (usually called delegates) will have a positive experience. The better the feedback from the delegates the better the conference will have been received by the end client, either your MD or client depending on whether you are doing it yourself, or are an event organiser.

There are many different types of conferences, one of the most popular types are seminars which are normally an academic style forum where people go to learn about a specific topic.Quite a few companies run free seminars to teach their clients about the products they sell and how they can help to fulfil a need. Quite often the clients do not realise they have the need until the seminar is over!

I mention Forum above because this is probably (at least to my knowledge) the oldest type of meeting or conference that I am aware of. My partner Sam will cringe at this, as when I discuss my work, I always have to get the Romans in the story somehow

A Short History of Conferences

The forum as many people are aware was the centre of power in Rome for many hundreds of years, a Roman general would return from a successful campaign and he would have been received at the forum and made a speech from the rostrum to the Roman people, about what he encountered on his travels and how he overcame the challenges he faced.

So for thousands of years people have been having conferences around the world, the tools for doing the job have changed, but I can imagine and have indeed read about, the effort and organisation that went into preparing for one was as important then as it is today.Much like decorating, running a successful conference is all in the preparation!

Things haven’t changed much no matter how large or small a conference is, there are some rules that we must all follow, if it is to be a successful event.

The Right Venue

Once you have a reason to hold a conference and an audience to attend the next step is venue selection, this is crucial as you will need a room large enough for the numbers attending, without being too large. If you are going to have a conference set with rear projection then the throw distance has to be taken into account when you are looking at the room, (I will come onto throw distance later when thing get more technical) as this uses space too.

Once you have a main meeting room suitable for your delegate numbers, you then have to consider where they will have tea and coffee breaks for networking and if there is potential for exhibition style displays. Quite often a conference you will have a large group of industry leaders and corporate decision makers, why not create a form of exhibition area to promote ancillary products or services?

When we do European conference production where a lot of the delegates are international travellers we choose a venue that is close to the airport.

Remember if you are going to do the job right you are also responsible for the delegate experience prior to arriving at the venue, you want them to have a pleasant journey and feel as relaxed as possible on arrival so venue location is very important.

Conference Production

Once a venue has been selected and it fits with all the criteria above, then it’s time to give your production company a call, they will normally recommend a site visit, so the room can be measured to check all of the conference production elements fit within the room available. There is nothing worse than turning up on the day to find something wont fit!

There are various different styles of the seating and this is an important consideration. There is theatre style seating where the delegates sit in rows next to each other. Then you have classroom style seating where delegates sit next to each other with a slim table in front similar to when you might take an exam. Then there is cabaret style seating which is where delegates are seated on round tables normally 6 feet in diameter.

After your production company has completed the site visit they will propose the elements of staging you require to achieve your purpose. This will include stage and set, video projection, sound, lighting, crew levels to operate the show, and any pre-production specifics.

Pre-production

Not all conferences require pre-production, for example if your conference has PowerPoint slides you may want your production company to create them for you, a lot of companies now have the expertise to do this in-house, but if that is the case they need to be of a professional standard.

You may want a video to be created, there are different types of messages you could utilise a video for, for example, a short opening sting, like an advert, to give an uplifting start to your show. Some of the best events start this way and it also helps to ensure you have got everyone’s attention!

Sometimes there may be presenters that can’t attend so you could have them videoed prior to the event and then played back during the conference at the appropriate time. You will have no doubt seen this kind of video message in awards ceremonies and of course the world famous This Is Your Life program.

Not all presenters are comfortable with presenting, so a speaker coach may be a good idea, the coach will do as much or as little as is required. Usually they will come into your offices and asses the presenters, presentation techniques and will advise accordingly.

Every day event management teams perform this work all over the world, as a delegate you rarely see them, but as a regular attendee to conferences you will be able to tell those that have been professionally managed.

However, if you decide to do it yourself, then below are some useful hints and tips to creating your own successful production. These tips are the culmination of over 25 years working as a conference producer.

Set and Staging

A conference set is usually a timber framed construction covered in a material of a colour that fits the client’s corporate colours, normally this would have an aperture in it for rear projection with a screen, the screen should be large enough for all of the audience to see the content on the screen without straining their eyes. There is nothing worse than being on the back row and not being able to see the screen, especially if it forms a major part of the presentation.

The base of the screen, known as the under panel, needs to be at least 1.2m (5ft) to ensure the audience has a clear view over the heads of the people sat in front of them.
This is where the ceiling height comes into play. For example if you had a screen height of 2.5m, a screen base of 1.2m and a screen header, above the screen, of 300mm the minimum ceiling height required is 4m, be sure to take into account any staging or steps in your measurements.

There are many different styles of set you can use, many companies have a stock set option which is pre-built, when it is used it is recovered to suit the client’s corporate branding. Other styles of set include a bespoke set where you consult a designer who will take a brief from you regarding the theme of the event and come up with a purpose built set with various options. This is of course more expensive compared to the standard stock set options. Provided you use a competent production company a stock set will do the job fine, unless you need something really different.

Whether you decide on a stock or bespoke set it is advisable to have some scale floor plans created to ensure all the elements fit into the available space and most production companies will do this in-house. if you went for the bespoke option you would receive some 3D drawings so you can visualise what the set will look like in the space where it is going to be located.

Once the set has been decided upon then the stage will also need to be included in the plans. The most cost effective stage option for corporate events is a standard stage the width of the set, which is normally about 2.5m deep and 450mm high.

The size also depends on what you want to have on stage during the conference, for example if you are going to have just one lectern or two, or if there is a requirement for a top table or some comfortable chairs and a coffee table.

Video Projection

Video projection is required if you want to put an image on the screen behind the speaker. The image can be data or video playback or indeed both. At small conferences this may just be a data projector and a laptop, controlled from the lectern, either with the client pushing buttons or with the help of a remote mouse so a presenter can move around the stage area freely. These are a great tool and whilst being relatively cheap to buy really help the presenter to get into their presentation!

You can also use a stage monitor screen so the presenter can see the slide changes without having to turn and look at the screen, the presenter should never have their back to the audience. To enable this you will require what we call a VCA DA this piece of equipment splits the signal from the laptop to both the projector and the stage monitor screen.

If the presenter is more akin to speaking than using a computer and doesn’t want to control their own slides then a cue light system can be used. This is a hand held controller that when pressed sends a signal to a light backstage and a technician then forwards the slides for the speaker.

If you want to play DVD’s you will require a DVD player with a preview monitor and a switcher. There are many different switchers you can use but it is recommended that if you’re going to play a lot of videos during your event then a good quality data switcher should be used.

So you’ve got your data projector, your cue light system, your stage monitor and your DVD playback.

How else might corporate events teams enhance a conference with video production?

Recently I did an event which had a live camera feed.

The client wanted this for two different reasons firstly there was a presenter that didn’t have any PowerPoint slides except a name slide, so when he was presenting we had a live camera feed on the screen so the audience had a more up close and personal experience with the presentation. Then we utilised the live camera feed during the question and answer session for the same effect. By using two cameras we were able to switch between the person asking the question and the speaker responding to the question so everyone could properly see and hear both the question and the answer.

The second reason was that the client wanted to use some footage for the internet like a webcast, to be run after the live event. Certain elements of the conference were edited out and compressed for the internet so that delegates who were unable to attend could get a feeling of the content of the conference|, simply by watching it on their PC’s}.

Sound System (Public Address PA)

The sound system can range from a couple of speakers and one microphone in a small conference for say 50 delegates, or multiple speakers and microphones for up to thousands of delegates.

The basic sound system requirements are speakers, amplifiers, microphones and a mixing desk.

The speakers are generally on stands, however if you are organising a large conference they may be able to be flown from truss above to give an even coverage in the centre of the room.

In the event that you do have a very large audience than a delay line is required, this ensures that the signal reaches all of the speakers in the various locations around the room, or venue, at the exact same time removing any echo.

There are various different types of microphones, the most commonly used these days are the tie clip radio microphones which enables the presenter the freedom to walk around the stage cable free.

If the presenters are going to stay at the lectern then lectern microphones which are wired are more suitable.

With regards the amplifier, most professional amps will run four speakers so if you need eight speakers for good coverage then two amplifiers will be needed. When the amount of speakers and amplifiers is specified, the next piece of equipment required is a mixing desk, generally people who are doing their own event don’t plan for this, but it can be the one piece of crucial equipment that makes the difference between an amateur and a professional event.

The mixing desk takes in all the signals that need to be heard through the speakers, such as the microphones, CD players and video playback. Once the equipment is plugged into the Mixing console, a feed is taken out of the desk and into the amplifiers, then from the amplifier to the speakers.

After this has been done the sound engineer then equalises the system which in layman’s terms means making it sound good in areas of the room. A well equalised sound system will have the feeling for the delegate, that the presenter is seated next to them not shouting from the front of the room.

All mixing consoles have a basic equaliser on the unit itself, however a professional conference producer will know it is advisable to get a separate graphic equaliser which has more options on it.

In a very large room it is recommend having what is called a multicore which as the name suggests is a cable with multiple cores inside it that carries the signals up and down the room from the control position from front of house to the control position backstage.

Lighting

Lighting is one of the most important visual elements of the conference. If you don’t have the luxury of a bespoke conference set then lighting can make all the difference.

There are several different types of lighting available, there is up-lighting normally provided by Par 64 floor cans, which you will recognise from seeing any professionally staged event. These can have coloured gel in them to add a set wash. There are also Fresnells which is a type of lamp which can hang from a truss or floor stand and again these can have a coloured gel in them to provide a set wash or coloured lighting effects. Profile lights are used to highlight elements of the set such as logos, steps or other details.

The most modern type of lamps on the market are LED lights. They are the most expensive type of lighting but they are worth it if you have the budget, the beauty of this type of lighting is that it can change colour at the press of a button|, which saves having to use gels to set the colour, and of course is a much more flexible for of lighting. I am sure you have seen LED lights being used all over the place these days, in torches, in mirrors, in cars, there are even some new cats eyes in the road that use LED lights.

Once the Lighting type and style is specified then it’s a good idea to get a lighting designer involved.

The designer will specify the type of lamp, where it should go, and what it’s going to do, if possible it’s best to hang lighting on a truss in front of the set, as opposed to using floor mounted stands. After the lighting has been decided on then it will need power, this usually comes from the venue supply via a dimmer rack to the lamps. A mixing console then controls the different stage effects which the lighting designer programs in.

Crew

The crew is very important as they pull all the elements of the show together, professional conference production companies will know the value of a crew communication system which comprises of headphones and belt packs for each crew member allowing them to communicate with each other.

On larger shows we have a production manager and if required a conference producer, either one of these will show call, which means they will tell the crew what they should be doing and when they should be doing it. For example, when a video is due to be played they will let the video engineer, the sound engineer and the lighting engineers know in advance so they are ready when the caller say run VT.

Transportation

Again transportation is a crucial aspect of any event, or else how is everything you have ordered going to get there at the right time on the right day? The size of the vehicle is dependent on the size of the show, it can be anything from a transit size van up to an arctic with a 40ft trailer. It is the responsibility of the conference production company to decide on the type and size of transportation, but remember if you are booking a venue and it’s a large show that requires an arctic then make sure the vehicle can get into the loading bay! Fortunately it is not from my own experience that I have learnt this but from watching a competitor learn the it the hard way many years ago at an event I was working at!

In Summary

Organising a conference requires a lot of forward planning, the more you put in to it before the event the smoother it will run on the day.

Remember to look after your crew because they are the ones who enable it to all happen, look after your presenters because they are the ones it is happening for, and most importantly look after your delegates if you want it to happen to them again in the future. If you follow these basic rules that then you will have a successful event, good luck!

Twitter Mania - Follow Me And I Will Follow You Back

Twitter, the social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and read other users’ updates (otherwise known as tweets), which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length, has no-doubt become quite a phenomenon. It is widely rumored that Twitter turned down an acquisition offer from Facebook for $500 Million. A recent TechCrunch report stated that Twitter’s valuation has reached in excess of $250 Million. There are reports that state that the reach of Twitter has exceeded that of Digg in a very short span of time.  With an excess of 5 Million users and over 50 Million monthly visits, everyone’s tweeting!

Needless to say, what’s made Twitter a revolution is its ease of use.  From signup to search, from following others to getting followed by others, to tweet or to retweet, to use the web or the phone, Twitter is just plain simple.  Add to this the power of Twitter APIs, there are hundreds of tools, utilities and apps that continue to spring from nowhere.  Today, there is a twitter tool just about to do anything you want on twitter.

Some use twitter for chit-chat.  Ranging from “I just got up, and am off to a shower” to “Please get out and vote for me”, much is being said in 140 characters or less.  Folks are asking questions and people in hundreds respond.  Advertisers market their products, Affilaites promote products, News sources announce breaking news and Bloggers post their blogs as tweets - whether for personal or for business, Twitter is seen everywhere and used by everyone.

It has never been easier to build a network of followers.  Never before has it been so easy to build a network of a 1,000 followers who follow what you have to say and are ready to receive a message from you.  And best of all, it costs nothing to do it!  Just think about what you would have to do to get a following of a 1,000 people - whether it is cold calling, or mail advertisement, or opt-in email marketing or a paid squeeze page lead capture - it takes a lot of time, money and effort.

The benefits being obvious, everyone is looking to build a wide follower base.  There is a widely prevalent phenomenon on Twitter that is increasing in popularity - “Follow Me and I will Follow You Back“.  This simply means that if you follow me on twitter, I will follow you right back.  There are two schools of thought on this.

The first school of thought is that it is not appropriate to follow everyone that follows you.  The second school of thought obviously thinks not.  The idea of not following everyone that follow you has some logic to it.  You could think of some parallels to this - “Buy my product, I will buy your product back” or “Subscribe to my newsletter, I will subscribe to your newsletter back”.  One could also argue that if you follow 1,000’s of people, you really can’t do justice, as multiple tweets from each one (assuming each one is active) would just be information overload and you simply can’t follow any tweet, giving it justice.  Both of these arguments could be argued as having some merit.  But, also not.

Think for a moment why people use Twitter.  True, one of the primary objectives is for you say what you are doing now and for others to tune in (or “follow”), but Twitter can be used for reasons well beyond that.  Twitter is a wonderful networking tool, where you can build relationships with others and communicate not just now, but for months and years to come.  You can sure tweet for the moment, but you can just as well message the other person in private.  And if it is true that Twitter is a social networking tool, and if others have something of value to offer to you in return, there is nothing unusual about you tuning into their message as well.  After all, you only stand to benefit!

The school of thought that says “Follow Me and I will Follow You Back” does has merit.  Just because two parties follow each other, there is no commitment or obligation.  Either party can ignore tweets, or can search through tweets by name, by RSS feeds or utilizing one of the infinite tools available, if the ongoing tweets are missed.  Either party can message each other, and either party can choose to review or ignore such messages.  And if one does not wants to be bothered, that could be done as well.  Worst case, one could unfollow and/or block others as well. Just as anything else in life, if you use the tool effectively, you will only stand to benefit.

Twitter is real.  Twitter works.  Twitter is the tool of the century - probably bigger and better than any other Social Networking or Web 2.0 tool.  Embrace it!

And if “Follow” bothers you, because you simply can’t follow 1,000’s of people (which I agree with and in that context, Twitter allowing one to follow 2,000 people may not make sense either, unless most are not active, in which case they should not be on Twitter in the first place!), then follow others on Twitter (and be followed) so you can use it to “Send and Receive Messages“.   Again, there is no better tool, whether online or offline, that allows you to be able to send and receive messages to such a wide audience that has mutually agreed to receive and send messages to each other.

If you agree with this thought process, maybe we should rephrase the theme to “Receive Me and I will Receive You Back“.    And, maybe we are not just talking Twitter, but rather an enhanced Twitter, one that is naturally Two-way, maybe we are talking Twowitter

The Importance of Wearing the Correct Bra Size

September 9, 2009 by The Linux Tutor · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Uncategorized

Introduction

Over the years as I matured my bra size increased, particularly after having babies. Before that I was a size 34 bust, but after giving birth I went up in size. After menopause my bust size increased again and I found my normal bra did not fit me anymore. One day I took the plunge and went into my local underwear store and had myself properly fitted and measured. To my amazement I discovered I was no where near the size I thought I was. The statistics from research carried out suggests that 70% of women are wearing the wrong bra size and many of these women have never actually been measured at all and so simply buy what they assume to be their size. Well if my experience is anything to go by then we women think we are a lot smaller than we are!

What most women do not realise is that a poor fitting bra can affect their health and well being. If for instance the bra is the wrong size it might cause severe back and shoulder pain with the constant resistance to the pressure on those areas of the body. As in the example above, bust size and shape will alter with variations of weight and hormonal change. This in turn will require a change in bra size. Because a woman’s shape may be in a constant state of flux, regular fittings about every 6 months are highly recommended. But if that does not happen then it is best to be fitted every time a new bra is purchased to ensure that you get the correct size.

To Find the Correct Bra Size

The best way to check that you are wearing the correct size bra is to go to a shop or store that offers a professional bra fitting service. A specially trained fitter will measure you to work out your correct size. The technique used is to take a tape measure and place it underneath the bust and around the rib cage so that it feels secure but not uncomfortable. If the number measured in inches is an even number you add four, if it is an odd number you add five to give you your bra band size.

Once the band size is established the next measurement to find is the cup size. This is done by placing the tape measure over the fullest part of the bust and around the back all at the same level. Again this should be firm but not too tight. Your cup size is the difference between the two measurements. For example if your bust size is the same as your bra band size you are an A cup, a 1 inch difference = B cup, 2 inches = C cup, 3 inches = D cup and so on. All measurements taken are really only used as a guide to bra size because bras size can vary greatly from manufacturers to manufacturers. Sometimes a very experienced trained professional can judge your bra size by eye and will not need to use a tape measure. Because women vary so greatly in shape and size it is not only the size of bra that is important, but also the type of support required and distribution of weight. A qualified fitter will be able to offer you advice on the correct type of bra to suit your needs.

Provided you have been correctly measured and professionally, fitted it is easy to achieve the appropriate big bra, with the perfect fit for you comfort.

Things to Notice about your bra:-

  • If you find that your bra rides up your back it may be because it has stretched. Try tightening the bra with the hook and eye clasp or buying a smaller band size (32 instead of 34).
  • If the opposite is the case and your bra is too tight try another band size up or even a bra that has a wider band fitting. You can also get extra hooks to fit on the end of your current bra that will ease the tightness under the bust.
  • Bulging sides can be remedied by choosing a bra that offers more cup coverage or is one band size bigger.
  • If you find that your bust is bulging out of the cups then you will most likely need a larger cup or band size. (Unless of course that is the fashion statement you are aiming for!)
  • For women who have larger busts, a bra with wider shoulder straps or even padded ones will give relief from sore shoulders.
  • A sagging bust line can be helped by choosing a bra that offers firmer support and avoiding stretchy fabrics.
  • An under-wired bra may give problems with soreness under the bust if not correctly fitted. In which some womes prefer to wear a non-wired soft cup bra.
  • Straps that slip usually mean they are too long so they can be adjusted to correct the problem. Otherwise choose a bra style with wider straps that will not slip down or buy a bra clasp to hold the straps together at the back

The Prevalence of Cancer

According to Cancer Research UK, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK and around 125 women a day are diagnosed with this particular form of cancer. Breast cancer rates have increased by 13% over the last ten years and one in nine women will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives. This may be due to the national screening programme, but early detection is vital for a good prognosis. Survival rates of 5 years or more after treatment is 80% and that means that there are a large number of women who require specialist bras especially after surgery.

As a result of the increased rates of breast cancer and manufacturers looking to specialise in new markets, the range of stylish Mastectomy bras and lingerie has increased quite considerably, so having had breast surgery does not mean that you can’t have stylish designer lingerie any longer.

Mastectomy Bra

Choosing lingerie after surgery where the breast or part of a breast has been removed can sometimes be quite a challenge and there will naturally be a period of adjustment. Part of the rehabilitation will be to acquire a prosthesis to use in conjunction with a mastectomy Bra towards recovering the normal silhouette.

The amount of surgery you have had will determine the type of product you require. The prosthesis should match the natural remaining breast or if two are required they need to restore the natural outline. When going for a fitting for a mastectomy bra it is important to have the right prosthesis with you.

If you are currently wearing full figure bras you will already know the importance of being correctly measured and fitted to ensure the right fit.

A Mastectomy bra is generally made from fabric that is designed to be more comfortable on sensitive and post-operative areas of skin, but this doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style or elegance, and a wide range of beautiful post-surgery lingerie is offered. These can be purchased as complete sets with matching bottoms. Apart from the different fabrics used, the main difference of a Mastectomy bra is that is has pockets to accommodate the prostheses and generally there will be a choice of a higher neckline and higher panels between cups. A Mastectomy bra will usually have adjustable straps for effective support. There is no need not to be stylish and feminine; bras with satin and lace trim also feature. Some Mastectomy bras also have a silver lining which aids healing.

Where there is a bilateral mastectomy the bra will need to accommodate the natural breast in one cup and the prosthesis in the other. Ensure that you find a shop with a qualified fitter to help you find exactly the correct size and fit to suit your shape. No prosthesis will look right if your bra does not fit properly and ideally the two should be fitted together, if that is not possible then choose the bra first.

Points to be aware of when choosing the correct mastectomy bra for you are:-

  • The prosthesis must fill the bra cup properly so that it doesn’t pucker or be over stretched
  • The underarm section is the same on both sides
  • The breasts are evenly aligned.

Where only part of the breast tissue has been removed (lumpectomy) then there is only a need for a breast enhancer. There are a range of styles and shapes for partial reconstruction usually made from silicone but another option is a bean prosthesis.

Polypropylene beans mould into the shape of the bra to give a really natural look and the beans allow air to circulate making it cool and comfortable.

There is also a range of swimsuits and bikinis designed with subtle modifications for the beach such as pockets for the prostheses, slightly higher necklines and closer underarm fitting with pre-formed cups to give natural contour to the figure. Again these come in every shape and size and don’t mean that you have to sacrifice new fashions, but they can be slightly harder to find.

Maternity Bras

When women become pregnant they outgrow their ordinary everyday bras very early on in pregnancy. The breasts become bigger and heavier in the first few weeks so a good support bra of the correct size is vital. As the pregnancy develops the breast size continues to change and fluctuate so regular measuring and fittings will help with comfort and health. Many midwives and retail outlets advise against purchasing an underwired bra during pregnancy and although there is no concrete evidence to show that underwires are harmful during this time, there does appear to be some potential risk. The reason for this advice is that the rigid wires found in underwired bras may interfere with the natural changes in the size and shape of the breast and restrict the increased blood flow to, and possibly hinder, the developing milk duct system.

Royce are one of the leading lingerie manufacturers of specialised bra suppliers providing post surgery bras online and in the boutiques.

To make sure you are wearing the best supporting bra a professional measuring and fitting service is a must during pregnancy. It is important that you are measured every six to eight weeks so that your specially trained fitter can assess your changing shape and fit you accordingly. When you are purchasing a maternity bra it is important that it offers you great support with wide straps and side panels. A wide under bust band and a deep centre at the front will also enhance this support.

A lot of pregnant women find that they feel very hot during pregnancy and a bra that is mainly cotton will help let the skin breathe. Look for a bra that has at least 4 rows of hooks and eyes so that your bra can grow through your pregnancy with you. Make sure that the bra fits without the breast spilling over the top and that the cups fit comfortably. As with your everyday bra make sure that the centre front is lying snugly on your breastbone, and if it’s early in your pregnancy remember that your rib cage will expand so fit your bra on the smallest fastenings so that you have plenty of room for growth. The opposite will apply for maternity bras purchased later in pregnancy of course, fit on the loosest hook and eye so that when your rib cage shrinks after birth, you can tighten your bra accordingly.

Conclusion

During the early stages of a woman’s life she will need appropriate bras to suit each stage. During the early teenage years a more modest non wired bra is the most suitable.

Later in adolescence where appearance is a serious business, a more fashionable good fitting bra to create a feminine silhouette can be worn.

In pregnancy a comfortable good supportive bra which has expanding fastenings allows for changes throughout the pregnancy without restriction and damage. Following the birth, a good nursing bra to allow for easy access needs to still support the breast as it fluctuates hourly during the day.

If women undertake vigorous exercise then it is doubly important she wears a good sports bra to reduce bounce as that stretches the pectoral muscles.

As a woman ages the breasts mature and so will need a good supportive structure that helps prevent sagging and yet retains a good outline. After menopause many women loose the full breast shape of their earlier years and at that point it is more important to find an appropriate type of bra that will help them feel good about themselves.

Many women have been unfortunate enough to have had a full or partial mastectomy in which case correct prosthesis and mastectomy bras are an essential part of the recovery programme.

Many women spend a great deal of time and money on hairdo’s, makeup and face pampering, yet often they neglect their greatest assets. Maybe it’s time we women start to think differently about the way we look after our bosoms’ and make sure they are clothed in comfortable, supportive and good looking items.

How To Get Low Interest Rate Credit Cards

There are several factors that should go into your decision considering what is the right credit card for you. The most obvious thing people tend to take into consideration when choosing a credit card is the interest rate charged on the credit card. Everyone would prefer the cards with the lowest interest rate on the market, but you have to build a great credit history and deal wisely in order to get one of these low interest rate credit cards. The better your credit rating, the more agreeable a card issuer will be toward giving you a lower interest rate.

The low interest rate credit cards are reserved solely for those with near perfect credit histories. Credit reports are used by credit card issuers to decide who can be entrusted with credit and who is more likely to fail to make their payments. You can’t get these low interest rate credit cards just because you are you. It isn’t personal thing. You have to start by building a credit history that the credit card companies can view. This credit history needs to show that you’re a responsible person.

You may want to speak to a financial advisor if you want to get some hints on the steps how to get low interest rate credit cards. These people know exactly how the credit industry works and what you need to do to get the cards you want. You have to be patient. It takes some years to build a good credit rating. You can start with some high interest cards. If you pay them off in full each month for a couple of years, you will be able soon to get the best credit card offers with lower interest rates. As long as you have a credit card or loan and you continually make payments on time, you will eventually get the card with the low interest rate you are looking for.

Reykjavik - The Most Northern Capital in the World

Reykjavik is one of Europe’s “hot” cities, thanks to its music scene and famed nightlife, with bubbling geysers and thermal springs nearby. Reykjavik’s special energy draws on its unique physical and cultural landscape.

The northernmost national capital on Earth is a city of breathtaking contrasts. Small wooden houses with corrugated-iron roofs stand alongside futuristic glass buildings. Sophisticated cultural centres are just minutes away from newly created lava fields. Reykjavik is also a city where international influences blend seamlessly with Icelandic traditions, creating a unique European culture with roots that are ancient, but an outlook that is supremely modern.

The founders.
In 874, Ingolfur Aranson became the first settler to step onto Icelandic soil. He called the place where he settled “Smoky Bay” because ghostly vapours rose out of the earth near his home. Reykjavik would not prosper until well into the eighteenth century, when Governor Skiili Magnusson revitalized Iceland’s economy by promoting wool manufacturing, fishing and shipbuilding. In 1749, he ordered that new harbours and shipyards be constructed on Smoky Bay, making Magnusson the city’s founding father. Reykjavik received its city charter in 1786.

Green Living Tips Include Solar Panels

Green living is no longer the sole concern of environmentalists. It is now a welcome lifestyle that individuals, families and companies are choosing to ensure that the things they do and the products they use have as little an impact on the environment as possible.

Green Living is any practical way you can make better ecological choices that are compatible with your normal life such as solar panels . From decreasing your water and energy use, to increasing your recycling and composting, and from buying earth-friendlier products, to investing in socially responsible companies, opportunities for Green Living can be found in many aspects of your daily life.

Green living is about finding a lifestyle which causes no permanent damage to the planet. It’s about finding sustainable answers to our needs and desires. Green living is no longer a vague term known only by environmentalists. One of the ways we know that an important social trend has hit the big time is when major consumer providers adopt the term. Green living is healthier and happier for you, your family and the global community.

Green Living is printed on unbleached, unchlorinated, recycled newsprint. This is an entirely low-tech process. Green living is really about sustainability, and sustainability creates resiliency in communities. It brings back true relationships with your neighbors, imbuing interdependency at a human level. Green living is extremely important to us. The hardest part is figuring out how to do it with ease.

Green living is most simply defined as a lifestyle that minimizes negative impact, and whenever possible, increases positive impact on the environment, especially when it comes to solar panels . Misconceptions about green products, which use less energy, provide cleaner air and water, and protect the environment, and the people who purchase them are common. Green living is starting to look more like a fashion statement than a genuine, beneficial effort to support environmental issues.

Despite the current good intentions of the business community and consumers to promote green, serious ecoresults will depend on making products and processes more sustainable without consumers even noticing it, and, if necessary, not leaving much room for consumers and companies to opt for less sustainable alternatives.

Green living can be as simple as installing low water use toilets to complete construction plans. Green living can be as simple as a tweak in your homes design. Design can influence our overall impact on the environment and home. Green living can be money saving depending on how you approach and stuff so make sure that to you look at the overall cost savings of things.

Green living can be gorgeous! From flooring to restoring, remodeling to recycling, to tree houses , find smart and stylish ideas for turning your home into an earth-friendly oasis. Green living can be as easy as using 10 less plastic bags a month!

Home Loan Refinancing to Get a Lower Interest Rate

September 8, 2009 by The Linux Tutor · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Uncategorized

Things never stay the same for too long, and there is nowhere where this is truer than in the case of home loan refinance. Changes in your circumstances as well as the state of the financial markets can make a major impact on your overall mortgage costs.

As we all know, interest rates fluctuate as time goes by and when they go lower it may be time to consider a refinancing of your already existing mortgage. Some questions you should ask yourself are how long you plan to stay in your current home, how much you might save by renegotiating your present interest rate, and what sort of costs are involved in a renegotiation.

For instance if mortgage rates are falling and you currently have an Adjustable Rate Mortgage, it may be prudent for you to consider switching to a Fixed-Rate Mortgage. In such a case, switching to a Fixed-Rate Mortgage may allow you to lock your rate in at the current low level. Since mortgage rates can fluctuate greatly in a fairly short period of time, by negotiating a mortgage refinance you may be able to adjust your loan to a fixed-rate and avoid the very real possibility of your interest rate climbing.

On the other hand, if you are only planning on being in your home for a few more years, it may not be worth it to go through with Mortgage Refinancing. Usually, if you expect to remain in your home for more than seven years, such a move could result in significant cost-saving.

Or let’s say you are planning to remain in your home for fewer than nine years. In that case you may wish to refinance your mortgage from a high-interest 30-year Fixed Rate Mortgage to an Adjustable Rate Mortgage with a lower interest rate and corresponding lower monthly payments. Generally speaking it is better to pay your mortgage off faster, but your budget may not allow you to pay as much on the principal of your house as you would like.

How Much Difference Can It Make? - An interest rate adjustment of 1/2 or 3/4 of a percentage point may seem relatively insignificant, but with today’s large mortgages and relatively low interest rates, a shift of 1/2 or 3/4 percent can make a huge difference. In fact, a reduction of only 1/2 to 3/4 of a percentage point can mean a significantly lower monthly mortgage payment.

This is one of those instances where paying attention to details is important. For example, lowering your interest rate by 1/2 of a percentage point on a $300,000 mortgage over 30 years can save you more than $30,000.

Car & Van Wraps Can Get You Noticed

Vehicle wrapping can be defined in its basic form as the process of completely or partly covering of a vehicle with full colour graphics. Wrapping an entire vehicle in self-adhesive vinyl may appear an unusual idea, but it allows a unique opportunity for the production of distinctive promotional graphics that can heighten your brand visibility.

Car wraps or van wraps are a very effective method of branding your business vehicle. New and existing clients will see your vehicles on the road every day, so with a vinyl wrap you can benefit from that advertising space. Vehicle wrapping is also cost effective compared to press advertising and will often cost less than a full page ad in a local journal.

Vehicle wraps are one of the most distinctive ways to promote your business. Wrapping allows businesses to extend their corporate branding and promotional advertising to a bigger market by use of full colour images and design. The designs can be as subtle or as extravagant as you prefer.

With hundreds of people seeing your company vehicle on a daily basis, it’s crucial to make a quick and lasting impression. Long or short term advertising campaigns can be accommodated by using vinyl which can be removed with the minimum fuss, leaving a spotless paint finish behind. The wrap protects the vehicle’s paintwork against stone chips, minor scratches and fading.

Car and van is an art form and needs to be professionally applied. When looking to get your vehicle wrapped you should search for a company with certified installers. This will ensure that the latest techniques and materials are used and that your car or van looks great for a long time to come.

Looking After Your eBay Donor Base

September 7, 2009 by The Linux Tutor · Leave a Comment

The vast majority of people who buy things on eBay are customers. But as any successful eBay seller knows, they aren’t just customers. You must remember that the customer is king, the key to maintaining a perfect feedback rating, and the key to ongoing business that can keep an eBay fundraising effort afloat. Cultivating ongoing relationships with satisfied customers is the key to ongoing business.

To those who sell on eBay to benefit nonprofit causes, customers are even more special: they are donors as well as buyers. They’re people who keep you going and make your activities possible. As anyone who has participated in one of eBay’s community forums can tell you, the internet is a great place to develop close relationships with individuals who share a common goal or interest, in other words, develop relationships with a wide online community.

On eBay and the internet, caring for and feeding donors is as important as it is in the offline world. eBay gives you several ways to maintain good relations with other members. The most important is eBay’s well-known feedback system, which rewards trustworthiness and punishes dishonesty.

You can also volunteer information that helps your donors providing them with the URLs of web sites they might like to visit, on eBay or elsewhere, or answering questions on the message boards. At the very least, you’ll gain the respect of your donors by responding quickly to e-mail inquiries, and making payment and shipping easy. It’s all about helping people to do the right thing.

Donor Support
If you’re affiliated with a charity, you already know about cultivating your donor base. It boils down to being nice to your donors: inviting them, nurturing them, praising them, and giving them special access and possibly other perks.

On the web (and by extension, on eBay), looking after donors is the same as providing a high-Ievel of customer service. But customer service on the Web is different than in other venues.

Nonprofits, like other organizations that sell on eBay or online, need to take into account the special way online consumers behave. In the traditional offline world, customer service is a matter of answering questions and solving problems with orders. Customer service representatives make themselves available to field questions and problems as they arise.

Customer care on the internet isn’t a matter of publishing a phone number or e-mail address and waiting for consumers to send you questions. Such basics are important, but it’s more a matter of making information easily available to consumers. The customer is in charge on the internet, not the seller. Customers choose to view your items for sale or visit your web site; they choose to make a bid or a donation, or go elsewhere with their money.

Many eBay sellers who receive questions from prospective bidders answer those questions quickly. But they go a step further, also. They also publish the questions and answers as additions to their sales descriptions. This reduces the number of similar questions you receive, which saves you some work; it also raises the level of customer service you provide, which makes prospective bidders more likely to purchase from you.

When you receive a question from a prospective buyer through eBay’s message system, you have the option of simply responding to the buyer privately, or adding the question and your response to the body of your sales description.

Baby Bedding Sets: Baby Bed Security is a Serious Matter

September 7, 2009 by The Linux Tutor · Leave a Comment

In today’s society everyone likes to throw away their stuff, but there is something special about our baby items that makes us want to keep them. Even so, when you are expecting a baby, people can’t wait to pass on their cribs and crib bedding. When family and friends donate bedding and cribs for your baby, respond with gratitude. After all, adding a baby to the family is expensive. Always make sure before you choose to use any bedding and crib for your child, that they are safe and won’t harm your child.

Your baby’s first bed is very important whether it is Moses basket or a crib. If someone has been kind enough to give you their crib you will most likely want to clean it up and perhaps repaint it. It is a good idea to check the safety of the crib while you are in the process of refinishing it. Always check baby bedding to assure safety. Wicker cradles or cribs can chip and splinter very easily so it’s always a good idea to triple check them for sharp edges and it’s always a good idea to replace the mattress because it may not be holding up as well as it should. Babies like to put things in their mouth, so be sure that no loose ends or pieces of material are left over when fitting the skirt.

As a matter of your baby’s safety, choose window drapes that do not have any dangling material that your baby might choke on. New bedding for the crib is always preferable.Well informed people at Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association in the USA or British Standards in UK advise so. JPMA seal of approval or the BS ‘Kite’ mark are the products that you should stick with as they have been extensively tested for safety and meet all requirement guidelines.

I don’t have a problem with hand-me-downs myself; I just make sure to thoroughly inspect them for safety. Anyway, it isn’t good for the environment to throw away perfectly decent furniture and baby bedding. As your baby will spend quite a good time in the crib, it is worth spending time on it to see whether it is safe and comfortable. Here are some tips to bear in mind when assessing the safety of the equipment you have for your baby. Before anything else, you want to make sure there is no chipped, loose, or dangerous paint and no jagged edges that your baby’s clothes will get caught on. The bars of the crib must be closer than 2 and 3/8 inches apart and the header and footer boards should not have any holes. Then the baby is free from any accident. A sturdy crib requires tight joints and fixings. You will want to make sure the side rail can be lowered or raised using one hand and when it is all the way up is is securely in place. Lastly, see to it that the top of the side rail is a minimum of 22 inches above the crib mattress, and that the mattress itself is firm and free of dirt.

It is a good idea to purchase a new mattress for your baby, and you should make sure that it is a good fit for your crib. Nursery bedding may be dangerous if not secured correctly, so be certain to tie the strings of the bumper tightly so that the baby cannot pull the bumper down. Alternatively, just take down the bumper completely. Babies under the age of 12 months should not have access to the following in their cribs: duvets, quilts, sheepskin or pillows, while use of these items could cause overheating. Sheets and blankets may be combined and used. Also keep a thermometer in the room ready for use. You will be astonished at a baby’s ability to climb and reach things, so cribs must be kept away from curtains, window blinds, cords, lamps or nearby furniture onto which they might lift themselves.

Babies don’t stay babies for long, so enjoy the short time they are little and for heavens sake, have a wonderful and fun time but keep it safe.

Wall Top Electric Fences

WALL TOP ELECTRIC FENCES
a Worthy addition to an attractive wall Electric fencing gives a very strong message, and if you are worried because you have a brick, cement or pre-cast wall, you do not have reason to fret because wall top electric fences are the perfect way to securing your premises. Various options are available bracket design and height variations add to the tasteful appearance of the installation.

With wall top electric fences, at least  five braided steel wire strands are used, which electrify the top part of the fence or gate, and brackets are placed in such a way that intruders cannot get over the fence. The wires of the fence carry the electrical charge.

While walls can delay entry, without reliable electric wires, your wall might just be an attractive feature of your home, and not an imposing deterrent.

There is nothing to compare with electric fencing when one wishes to keep intruders off your property. Not only will the intruder be faced with a physical barrier, they will also be exposed to high voltage pulses that will deter the most hardened criminal. Wall top electric fence, apart from acting as a physical barrier,  can also act as an early warning alarm system. There is no doubt, converting existing walls to wall top electric fences is an asset to home owners and businesses alike.

The world out there is dangerous. You can not afford to have a wall that is just a pretty face an electric fence system can be easily fixed on an existing perimeter wall or as an add on to an existing perimeter fence. Electric fences have revolutionized fencing entirely, and carefully designed wall top electric fences have already increased security to many who believed an existing wall could not be electrified!  A too thin wire, a bad join or faulty or leaking insulator will lessen the shock the intruder receives. The object of electric fencing is to make this shock as severe as possible.

The Basics of Managed Futures

Managed futures is defined as an organization composed of commodity trading advisors that provide financial management of client assets using a unique trading system that involves discretion trading of short or long term future contracts in various commodities such as metal, grains and equity.

Among the many inferences that provide insight into managed futures trading is their capacity to lower a client’s portfolio risk. This argument is supported by several studies on the long term effects of combined traditional asset management with alternative investment like futures trading.

If you plan to invest your assets with a private financial manager take these things into consideration: You need to prepare by creating an important assessment about disclosure documents as well as trading plans and fees to make sure you know what you’re getting into.

Ask your CTA about the kind of trading protocol that he follows. Generally there are two types of trading practice in the CTA community. Some traders are trend followers while others are made up of neutral traders which include options writers.

Trend following makes use of proprietary fundamental trading processes that give signals when it’s right to go with short or long term futures trends in the market. Market Neutrals look for profit through commodity spreading and non predictive trading principles.

With your preference of CTA, an important factor to consider is the disclosure documentation. Make sure that you pick a CA with the maximum peak-to-valley correlation. This will provide an insight into the CTA’s largest decline in equity or account.

This will give you a window into evaluating the risk involved with the CTA’s previous performance. Always remember that knowledge is power. Being informed will help you pick the right CTA and ensure that your investment portfolio is in good hands.

Arming yourself with a lot of information never hurt. Take into consideration that this is your hard earned money, so take the necessary steps to enhance risk adjusted returns. With the right program and CTA, Managed futures will do this for you.

Penang Island in Malaysia

Situated on the north-western coast of the Malay Peninsula at the entrance to the Straits of Malacca, Penang Island covers an area of 292 sq km (112 sq mi). The island is separated from mainland Malaysia by a channel of sea varying between 3 km (1.9 mi) and 13 km (8 mi) wide, and they are linked by the 13.5 km (8.4 mi) Penang Bridge, one of the longest bridges in the world.

The island has the oldest British settlement in Malaysia, which was founded by Captain Francis Light in 1786 while he was searching for a docking place for ships of the East India Company. Captain Light made a treaty with the Sultan of Kedah who gave him permission to colonize the sparsely populated island.

Penang today is a fine mixture of old and new: bustling, industrial port meets historic Old Town. In the capital, Georgetown, modem skyscrapers tower above one of the largest collections of pre-war buildings in south-east Asia. Colourful produce markets compete for space with high-tech electronics manufacturers. There is also a fascinating mixture of cultures here. Hundred year old churches, Chinese temples, Indian temples and mosques stand side by side.

In the middle of the bustling modern city is Penang Hill (Bukit Bendera), at almost 900 m (2,953 ft) high, with its cool, clean air. From its summit there are amazing views of the town, the island, and even the mountains on the mainland when the sky is clear. There is a Swiss-built funicular railway to take visitors to the summit, which creaks its way up through the beautiful tropical forest. At the top of the hill there is a cafe, a Hindu temple and a mosque.

If you want to escape the busy city, there are other attractions on the island, including plenty of lovely beaches, some quaint fishing villages, beautiful stretches of forest and cascading waterfalls. Among the less crowded beaches are Muka Head, Pantai Keracut, Monkey Beach, Pantai Acheh and Gertak Sanggul.

Penang Island is enriched by its numerous ethnic communities, among them Malays, Chinese and Indians, which live side by side in harmony to create a multi-faceted culture. Each community maintains its cultural identity through religious festivals and cultural shows, including angsawan, Boria, flag processions, the Chingay Parade, the Nine Emperor Gods Festival, the Hungry Ghosts Festival and Thaipusam. This succession of colourful festivals unravels throughout the year and when one big celebration is finished, another begins.

Drop Ship Products Can Be Found If You Know The Right Directories

September 6, 2009 by The Linux Tutor · Leave a Comment

An example of the new, innovative developments in the area of electronic commerce has been the development of drop ship products. Now, any entrepreneur can open a business without the hassle or expense of having to warehouse a lot of products. Dropshipping simply means that anyone can sell items that you do not warehouse yourself. When you receive an order for a product, you simply buy the popular drop ship products from your supplier, and the supplier sends the order on your behalf.

Suppliers that offer drop ship services send your client the item in either a unmarked package, or along with a box that has your company’s name and address printed on the box. Your customer has no idea that their item actually is shipped from a drop ship products supplier. If you have concerns that this type of commerce technique is not legitimate enough for a small businessperson, consider that big players such as Amazon and Target also use partner suppliers to fulfill their orders. In this way, they drop ship, too.

Finding a good provider of products that are allowed to be drop-shipped is usually hard for newcomers. There are many ’scam’ sources that tell you they provide drop-ship services, but are actually middlemen that are only providing you a service that you could get cheaper yourself. Remember, if your drop ship products directory does not give you the actual contact information of the primary company that actually produces the items, they are not a reputable drop ship service, just a middleman.

The best way to find providers that drop ship is to use a drop ship source directory directory. There are many such services on the Internet, some good, some not so good. So how do you find out the best service to use? Simply check to see that the provider of the products you are buying from is the original maker or producer of the product. A drop ship source directory that directs you to a distributor that sells many products from many vendors is likely a middleman. Avoid these types of services, or you’ll be paying more and getting less.

Once you have located a good drop ship wholesaler service that is not a middleman, then you can get in contact them and establish an account with those firms. Drop shipping is one terrific method to get started in e-commerce, just be sure you are dealing direct; don’t’ use middlemen.

5 Top Commercial Tanning Beds Features & 6 Tips to Buying at Wholesale

For most salon owners, tanning bed technology advances so quickly that they find themselves behind the curve straining to keep up. Here are five of the hottest features in Level 1 & Level 2 tanning beds and six steps to getting them at the best price.

1. 360° Tanning
Some commercial tanning beds are breaking new ground in tanning bed design. They have eliminated the walls, just beautiful open space.  This is the type of bed we’ll be seeing more of in the next decade for sure.

2. Suspended Acrylics
This is another new feature that is usually part of the open design beds mentioned above. The suspended acrylic bed allows for a comfortably curved, ergonomic tanning experience.

3. Integrated Audio
We live in world where personal audio is a must have. It is only natural for tanners to want to listen to their own music while tanning and many beds allow them to plug in their iPod –or mp3 player– and listen without earphones getting in the way.

4. Shoulder Lamps
Only standup tan booths get that “absolutely everywhere” tan but many tanning beds are including shoulder lamps to take the horizontal tan to new areas.

5. All Metal Frame
A steady stream of customers, constant cleaning and regular maintenance sessions can a toll on commercial tanning beds. An all metal structure holds up to the abuse, last longer and makes the tanning bed nearly indestructible.

Buying at the Lowest Price
Now, you want the best price on these features, right? Of course you do. While there is no one “store”, online or offline that has the lowest price –like a Wal-Mart for tanning beds– there are a few purchasing options that will yield you the best deal on tanning beds.

Step 1 - Determine the types of tanning beds your salon needs. Let’s say you have decided that you need one standup tanning booth and one higher-end face lamp bed.

Step 2 - Now, investigate brands and features of those types of tanning systems and compare published prices and special offers. Study well and know your stuff!

Step 3 - Contact 3 sales reps and begin to negotiate. NOTE: The idea here is NOT to pit one sales rep against the other and “force” the lowest offer. Just be up front, let each rep know this is how you make your buying decision and ask them to see what they can do for you.

Step 4 - Don’t rush into a purchase. This method takes time but it will get you the best price or terms on any tanning bed, whether its a commercial bed or for home use.

Step 5 - Be flexible. Sometimes the tanning bed rep can’t meet the price of another distributor but can offer something else, like 0% financing or an extended warranty which, in effect, makes his deal better.

Step 6 - Finally, once you have made your decision, call up that distributor and ask the final killer question: “Is that the best you can do?” You may be surprised at what gets thrown in just before you seal the deal.

Kiev City Snapshot

Despite numerous invasions and devastating destruction, the Ukrainian capital of Kiev is still one of the most beautiful cities of Eastern Europe. The Communist period, which lasted barely seventy years, did it little harm. On the contrary, the new potentates of the post-WW-II era built parks and created green spaces, along with the inevitable television tower found in every former Soviet city.

Cradle of the Slavs.
The earliest mention of Kiev dates to the early sixth century. Three brothers founded it as a fortress, naming it the “City of Kyi” (Kyjiw) after the eldest brother. Over the course of many centuries Kiev has been the administrative, political and religious centre for numerous different rulers and empires One of these was the medieval state Kievan Rus, which included parts of what are now Russia, the Ukraine and Belarus. In light of this, Kiev has justifiably been called the cradle of the Slays.

A Russian culture.
Kiev was one of the great centres of medieval Europe in its ninth, and tenth-century golden age under the leadership of the grand dukes Sviatoslav, Vladimir and Yaroslay. Through its valuable commercial agreements with Constantinople, Kiev was always in close contact with the Byzantine Empire. This led, in 988, to the conversion of Kievan Rus to the Orthodox faith. This brought not only new sacred structures, but also an influx of Russian culture.

This influence continued during the Middle Ages when nearly all of south-eastern Europe was under the yoke of the Mongol invasion (12401569). In 1667, Russia annexed Kiev, the “mother city of Russia”, which in the meantime had been reduced to a simple provincial capital. Following its annexation, Kiev quickly made up for lost time, becoming the commercial and cultural centre of the Ukraine and, with the dissolution of the Soviet Union. in 1991, the capital city of an independent Ukrainian state.

The cave cloister.
Currently, Kiev is the undisputed centre of Ukrainian life, with its theatres and museums defining the cultural landscape. Kiev is also home to a number of sites that relate to its long history. The old city includes buildings and other structures built over a period of 1,500 years.

The greatest of these is probably the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (Monastery of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin), built in the year 1050 by immigrant monks who dug caves into the Dneiper escarpments. Eventually, the monastery was expanded to include a complex of churches and cloisters both above and below ground.

This spiritual and cultural centre of the early Kieven Rus Empire is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 1991, St. Sophia Cathedral was also added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Begun in the eleventh century, the expansion and decoration of this exceptionally ornate church with its opulent frescoes and mosaics was completed in the seventeenth century. The cathedral was a focal point of cultural and political life during the early years of the Russian State.

Kreschatik.
In comparison to Kiev’s many magnificently decorated historical facades, those along Kiev’s main thoroughfare, the Khreschatyk, are no less impressive despite their more recent vintage. Completely destroyed during World War II and rebuilt since, many of the newer buildings, while conspicuously Stalinist in style, are somehow less staid, and perhaps more southern, than buildings from this period elsewhere in Eastern Europe. The street is lined with sidewalk cafes where young and old gather to share a drink and some conversation. Kiev’s own particular variety of joie de vivre is most palpable along the Khreschatyk, and one even runs into the occasional tourist.

verdant bud of recovery or frail economic yoyo?

Japan is the most current in a long line of political powers who have interpreted a small absolute sway in GDP as their economic saviour, but is this just an aspiration or a honesttrue shift in the direction of recovery?

With administrations vying for position in the race to pronounce that their recession is over, have we appeared at a position where the politicians who talked us into it are now aimiing to cooax the general public that we should now put our rose coloured spectacles back on.

It is tempting to be swayed that technology and industrial prosperous economic systems forge to the front in providing statistically positive results, but in truth both Germany and Japan have used small monthly swings as political disinformation. Can it truly be the case that in such a small period of time that towering industrial mammoths have taken hold of the initiative and brought their collossus to a halt and reversed them through 180 degrees?

It seems unlikely.

However, the men in stocks and shares, and the men in money tranfer devour such activity as an almost default reason to enter into transactions. It seems to me more reasonable that they are charged with a knee jerk reaction.

I’m sure that administrations depend on the fickle nature of the populace to coeorce their view of way that a country runs , but at the bottom of the economic engine, we can only decide based on the propaganda that is trickled down to us. Being kept entirely occupied by the routine of making living leaves less time to inspect the prodigious amount of beurocratic literature that allows the individual to make an valued evaluation of the situation.

Eventually, a new roller coaster will start up, and that unsteered machine will rely on innovation and innovative people to guide it. Ensure that you are first in the queue waiting there with us as innovators to support you when you climb on board.

Republic of Mauritius

Part of the Mascarene Islands, the Republic of Mauritius is off the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean, 900 km (560 mi) east of Madagascar. The republic consists of five islands: St Brandon, Rodrigues, two Agalegas Islands and Mauritius itself.

The latter was originally uninhabited, but the Dutch named the island and established a colony that was seized by the French in 1715. They renamed the place Ile de France and built a prosperous economy based on sugar. But the British took the island in 1810 and it reverted to the original name.

Independence was granted in 1968 and this Commonwealth country is a stable democracy with one of Africa’s highest per capita incomes. This might be guessed by a visitor to Port Louis, who finds a sophisticated place with a cluster of high and medium rise buildings that might be mistaken from afar as the downtown area of a small American city, were it not for its location beside the azure Indian Ocean, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation.

Tourism has become an increasingly important sector of the economy, which had hitherto been based on sugar plantations and off-shore financial services.

The effort to attract visitors is proving successful, and might not even need the boost of a move to duty-free status. Mauritius is the most accessible island in the Indian Ocean, with wonderful beaches and crystal-clear waters.

Important though these essential ingredients of every tropical holiday destination may be, Mauritius has something extra, friendly people and a vibrant cultural mix that will leave an indelible impression.

There is a festival or fiesta practically every week and a tempting variety of ethnic food choices. The place must be good. Famous writer Mark Twain remarked that Mauritius was made before heaven, and heaven modeled on Mauritius.

Elephantine Island of the Nile River

September 5, 2009 by The Linux Tutor · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Uncategorized

Known to the Ancient Egyptians as Abu or Yabu, meaning elephant, Elephantine Island is a truly ancient site resting as it does at the First Cataract of the Nile, and creating a natural boundary between Egypt and Nubia.

Being the largest island at Aswan, it was easily defensible and at one time was thought to be a major ivory trading centre, possibly giving rise to its name. But rumour has it the name may also arise from the elephant-shaped granite boulders lying around its shores.

It is said that Khnum, the ram-headed god of the cataracts, dwelled in caves beneath the island and controlled the waters of the Nile. Nowadays, the southern tip of the island holds the ruins of the Temple of Khnurn, which was rebuilt in the 30th dynasty. Up until 1822, there were also temples to Thutmose III and Amenhotep III here, but the Ottoman government in their wisdom destroyed them.

Elephantine is an exquisite island, steeped in ancient history and blessed with significant artefacts. Transported instantly back in time, you wander under banana trees and date palms through colourful Nubian villages with narrow, dusty alleyways and mud houses painted or carved with crocodiles and fish.

On the edge of the island is one of the oldest Nilometers in Egypt. It is a stone `yardstick’ used to measure the height of the River Nile. It was last reconstructed in Raman times and was still in use as late as the 19th century. Its 90 steps, leading down to the river, are marked with Hindu-Arabic, Roman and hieroglyphic numerals, and inscriptions carved deep into the rock during the 17th century can be seen at the water’s edge.

Elephantine Island is a green, flower-festooned oasis of calm lapped by the turquoise waters of the Nile and clinging quietly to its exotic past.

Kihnu Island in the Baltic

September 5, 2009 by The Linux Tutor · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Uncategorized

Kihnu lies 12 km (7 mi) off the coast of Estonia and is the largest of more than a dozen islands in the reefs and shallows of the Gulf of Riga. It is 16 sq km (6 sq mi) in area with a low ridge running down the middle and only 9 m (30 ft) above sea level at its highest point.

The island farmsteads are enclosed by forest, which prevents soil erosion as well as protecting the islanders from the bitter northeast winds.

Huge broadleaf trees stand like sentinels in the coastal meadowlands that lead to a 36 km (22 mi) long shoreline of dunes and shifting sands where the scent of juniper is everywhere in the air. The island is a nesting place for hundreds of bird species and the coastal reef is home to the last grey seal colony in the Baltic.

The first historical documents relating to Kihnu date from the late 14th century but excavations show that the island was inhabited, at least during the summer months, from around 1500 BC.

It has at various times been under Danish, Swedish, Estonian, Polish and Russian rule, reflecting the turbulent history of the Baltic.

Since time immemorial the men here have been seafarers and fishermen, skilled at woodwork and shipbuilding, while the women are wholly responsible for working the land and keeping alive the rich island culture of music, dance and poetry.

A trip to Kihnu transports you back in time into a fascinating folk culture. The inhabitants speak their own language and wear traditional homespun costume. Each woman makes her family’s clothes with intricately knitted, woven and embroidered patterns symbolising ancient legends.

The islanders are symbiotically bound up with their harsh environment, their survival entirely dependent upon cultural loyalty and community sharing. Against all odds, they have managed to hang onto their heritage at the same time as welcoming strangers to their shores.

Indoor Flash Photo Tips

September 5, 2009 by The Linux Tutor · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Uncategorized

Over the years, you’ve probably seen plenty of indoor flash pictures that have a pitch black background and a washed-out, overexposed subject. Many factors conspire to produce these stark, unflattering shots, but one of the major contributors is, once again, your camera thinking on its own. You’re letting it decide when to turn on the flash and which shutter speed to use.

First of all, you don’t always need the flash. Indoor photography offers many opportunities for stunning existing-light portraits and moody interior shots. And when you do have to turn on the flash, you can make certain adjustments to preserve the ambiance of the room so that your background doesn’t fall into a black hole.

Flash shots may have a pitch-black background for a couple of reasons. The first problem is that the light from a typical digital camera’s flash reaches only about 2 to 3 metres. Anything beyond this range, and you’ve got yourself an inadvertent ambient-light photo.

If your camera has a manual mode that allows you to dictate both the aperture (f stop) and shutter speed, you can easily overcome these problems.

Once in manual mode, try this combination as a starting point for flash photography indoors:

• Set your film speed to 100
• Set the aperture (f-stop) to f-5.6.
• Set the shutter speed to 1/15th of a second.
• Use the forced-flash mode. (Don’t use the red-eye reduction feature)

When you use these settings, hold the camera as steady as possible or better yet, use a tripod. At these slow shutter speeds, your shots are more vulnerable to camera shake, and therefore to blurriness. Your flash will help freeze everything in its range, but the background, not illuminated by the flash, may blur if the camera isn’t steady.

If your camera doesn’t have a manual mode, all is not lost. Almost every consumer model has a night time or stow-synchro mode (look for a “stars over a mountain” icon). The intention of this mode is to let you shoot portraits at twilight. But you can also use Nighttime mode indoors to open up the background. Granted, you don’t have as much control with this setting as you do with manual mode, but you may be pleasantly surprised with the results.
