What Modern Science Says About Reversing The Aging Process

July 31st, 2009

There’s an old, full of both wit and reason, that really rings true: “Everyone wants to go to heaven but no one wants to die.”

So why is it that we seem to want to live forever?Well, if you can believe Dr. Sanjay Gupta, author of “Chasing Life” and CNN’s Senior Medical Correspondent, we don’t.

Apparently, our real quest is not eternal life on earth, according to Dr. Gupta, but instead, the ability to lead an exceptional life.

After interviewing some of the leading authorities on life extension and anti-aging, Dr. Gupta uncovered three “universals” — three vital principles that each researcher deemed critical to extending our lives naturally at the same time as empowering us to live exceptionally. These three principles are as follows:

  1. Weight training
  2. Good nutrition
  3. Having purpose and positive thinking

Jon Benson, author of “Fit Over 40″, explores each of the three principles in great detail, as well as asking 52 men and women how they have managed to slow the hands of time down to a complete crawl.

Benson doesn’t waste time with hype and hypothesis. Instead, he focuses on real-world examples and applications that all of us can use to slow down the aging process and help prevent, and even reverse, the conditions that can lead to disease.

Learn more about Fit Over 40 now.

You too can live a longer and more exceptional life, by simply adopting a smart, realistic and enjoyable lifestyle fitness plan. And if science ever happens to catch up with Father Time, you’ll already be many steps ahead of the curve.

Child Care Tax Credit for 2009, 2010

July 30th, 2009

If you rely on someone else to help care for your children while you are working then chances are that you must pay them for their services. Although this can be very expensive there are some great tax benefits you can receive for child care.

By claiming the child care tax credit you will be reducing your current tax liability which can make your tax bill much lower.

As with any credit there are some guidelines that must be followed:

  • The care must be provided for a qualifying individual.

  • The credit will only cover care that was provided while you or your spouse was working.

  • You and your spouse must have annual taxable income to prove you are working.

  • The care cannot be provided by a spouse or anyone under the age of 19.

  • You must file your taxes as single, married filing jointly, head of household, or as a qualifying widower.

  • The care provided must be for a dependent that lived in your home for more than half of the year.

  • The credit cannot exceed 35% of your qualifying expenses.

The child care tax credit covers qualifying children as well as disabled adult dependents. You may receive a credit for up to $3,000.00 for each dependent that care was provided for. The child must be under the age of 12 and the adult must be unable to care for themselves while you are away.

Super Detailed Model Trains - Are They Too Good to Be Just Toys?

July 30th, 2009

The interest in model trains has seen a huge increase over the last few years, and particularly in recent months. The recent increase in popularity, especially in the UK, has been attributed to the credit crunch forcing people to get involved in more home based and family oriented activities, rather than days or evenings out.

Model train build quality has also improved enormously in recent years. Having started out as crude tin plate, through basic plastic injection moulding, some of today’s models are incredibly intricate works of model engineering, with impressive amounts of detailing. This level of detail really captures the character and feel of the prototype locomotive, coach item of rolling stock being reproduced.

Recent offerings of Hornby Trains are particularly fine model trains with exceptional detailing. They are no longer just simple plastic mouldings, with all the detail cast into the main moulding. These later models are now put together using many different parts. As an example, the model released recently of the Hornby Schools Class shows an entirely reworked model. The firebox, boiler and dome are all cast in metal, whilst the smokebox, running plate, cab, chimney and smoke deflectors are plastic.

There is an abundance of accurate rivet detail and there are plenty of separately fitted items, such as brass safety valves, clack valves, nameplate, chimney and wire handrails.

It is almost a shame that perhaps the most visually attractive area of detailing will be almost lost from view. That is the cab interior and boiler backhead. The detailing quality of the cab instruments, control levers and wheels is absolutely wonderful. With a keen eye or by using a magnifying glass, you can even read the gauges, and the water gauge glasses, regulator, reverser and atomiser could be regarded as miniature works of art.

So will models of this quality end up being run on layouts by young children, or are these models now aimed at collectors to proudly put on display? It is true that these new, highly detailed models do look absolutely fabulous on display but also look magnificent on a highly detailed layout. That is not to say that they look out of place on a simple layout either.

Hornby have obviously thought of this as they often produce Limited Edition models, clearly aimed at the collector. In 2008 they produced a 70th Anniversary Edition of the World Famous Class A4 Mallard, complete with gold plated exterior metal parts. This specially commissioned pack was limited to 5000 and each one comes complete with a certificate of Authenticity.

With the advent of Digital Control, (DCC) locomotives now have features such as working lights that stay on something not feasible with a normal analogue layout unless using a separate power source in each loco and also sound. These new features bring a whole new level of realism to the hobby. These DCC locomotives are obviously intended to be used on layouts to add extra dimensions to the operation of the layout, and also to add extra realism to the observer.

In contrast to this, Hornby also have a range of models targeted at the younger enthusiast. Known as the RailRoad range, these models do not have the smaller, more easily damaged detail parts that adorn the new super detailed models. The Hornby RailRoad Range also offers the younger enthusiast a cheaper entry into the hobby.

So, summing up. Are model trains toys, models or miniature works of art? The impressive quality of some of the recent models could well be thought ofas works of art. Many people are of the opinion that steam locomotives were works of art and these new models faithfully reproduce the character and charm of the originals. However, how many children still get a great amount of pleasure from operating their first train set? These are the ones that will become future enthusiasts and collectors as they grow older.

I suppose the answer is Yes to all three!

The Island of Zitny Ostrov - Slovakia

July 29th, 2009

Extending from Bratislava to Korman in southwestern Slovakia, Zitny Ostrov (Rye Island) is Europe’s biggest river island. It is so big that most tourists are not aware of being on one. It lies between the Danube, and its slower running tributary the Little Danube, in the Danubian Plain.

Several rivers flow across it and the dark alluvial deposits make it the most fertile land in Slovakia. The island also contains central Europe’s largest reservoir of pristine potable water and it has the warmest and least humid weather in Slovakia.

A beautiful area of marshes, natural and man-made lakes and rich agricultural land, the south has been deemed a Protected Landscape. The still waters of the Little Danube provide excellent boating through the alluvial forests. While on the water, the controversial hydroelectric dam at Gabcikovo may also be visited.

Zitny Ostrov has two main towns, both of which have deep Hungarian influences. DunajskA Streda has a majority Hungarian population, though the only reminder of a significant Jewish minority is a memorial erected in 1991. There is also signs of Bronze Age settlement here.

In the late 1990s the town centre was rebuilt with distinctive white buildings capped by towers and elaborate tiled roofs. A large thermal park offers year-round bathing in naturally heated water.

Komarno, Slovakia’s main port, is located on the Hungarian border — a bridge leads into Hungarian Komarom, which used to be part of Komarno. Here two thirds of the population speak Hungarian and the street signs are in two languages.

Europe Place is a large shopping and tourist centre built in a variety of European architectural forms. A native son of Komamo, Franz Lehar, is honoured with a biennial music festival, whilst the annual Komarno Days Festival celebrates Slovak and Hungarian culture.
