Child Care Tax Credit for 2009, 2010

If you rely on someone else to help care for your children while you are working then chances are that you must pay them for their services. Although this can be very expensive there are some great tax benefits you can receive for child care.

By claiming the child care tax credit you will be reducing your current tax liability which can make your tax bill much lower.

As with any credit there are some guidelines that must be followed:

• The care must be provided for a qualifying individual.

• The credit will only cover care that was provided while you or your spouse was working.

• You and your spouse must have annual taxable income to prove you are working.

• The care cannot be provided by a spouse or anyone under the age of 19.

• You must file your taxes as single, married filing jointly, head of household, or as a qualifying widower.

• The care provided must be for a dependent that lived in your home for more than half of the year.

• The credit cannot exceed 35% of your qualifying expenses.

The child care tax credit covers qualifying children as well as disabled adult dependents. You may receive a credit for up to $3,000.00 for each dependent that care was provided for. The child must be under the age of 12 and the adult must be unable to care for themselves while you are away.

 

Super Detailed Model Trains - Are They Too Good to Be Just Toys?

The interest in model trains has seen a huge increase over the last few years, and particularly in recent months. The recent increase in popularity, especially in the UK, has been attributed to the credit crunch forcing people to get involved in more home based and family oriented activities, rather than days or evenings out.

Model train build quality has also improved enormously in recent years. Having started out as crude tin plate, through basic plastic injection moulding, some of today’s models are incredibly intricate works of model engineering, with impressive amounts of detailing. This level of detail really captures the character and feel of the prototype locomotive, coach item of rolling stock being reproduced.

Recent offerings of Hornby Trains are particularly fine model trains with exceptional detailing. They are no longer just simple plastic mouldings, with all the detail cast into the main moulding. These later models are now put together using many different parts. As an example, the model released recently of the Hornby Schools Class shows an entirely reworked model. The firebox, boiler and dome are all cast in metal, whilst the smokebox, running plate, cab, chimney and smoke deflectors are plastic.

There is an abundance of accurate rivet detail and there are plenty of separately fitted items, such as brass safety valves, clack valves, nameplate, chimney and wire handrails.

It is almost a shame that perhaps the most visually attractive area of detailing will be almost lost from view. That is the cab interior and boiler backhead. The detailing quality of the cab instruments, control levers and wheels is absolutely wonderful. With a keen eye or by using a magnifying glass, you can even read the gauges, and the water gauge glasses, regulator, reverser and atomiser could be regarded as miniature works of art.

So will models of this quality end up being run on layouts by young children, or are these models now aimed at collectors to proudly put on display? It is true that these new, highly detailed models do look absolutely fabulous on display but also look magnificent on a highly detailed layout. That is not to say that they look out of place on a simple layout either.

Hornby have obviously thought of this as they often produce Limited Edition models, clearly aimed at the collector. In 2008 they produced a 70th Anniversary Edition of the World Famous Class A4 Mallard, complete with gold plated exterior metal parts. This specially commissioned pack was limited to 5000 and each one comes complete with a certificate of Authenticity.

With the advent of Digital Control, (DCC) locomotives now have features such as working lights that stay on something not feasible with a normal analogue layout unless using a separate power source in each loco and also sound. These new features bring a whole new level of realism to the hobby. These DCC locomotives are obviously intended to be used on layouts to add extra dimensions to the operation of the layout, and also to add extra realism to the observer.

In contrast to this, Hornby also have a range of models targeted at the younger enthusiast. Known as the RailRoad range, these models do not have the smaller, more easily damaged detail parts that adorn the new super detailed models. The Hornby RailRoad Range also offers the younger enthusiast a cheaper entry into the hobby.

So, summing up. Are model trains toys, models or miniature works of art? The impressive quality of some of the recent models could well be thought ofas works of art. Many people are of the opinion that steam locomotives were works of art and these new models faithfully reproduce the character and charm of the originals. However, how many children still get a great amount of pleasure from operating their first train set? These are the ones that will become future enthusiasts and collectors as they grow older.

I suppose the answer is Yes to all three!

I’m always looking for ways to maximize my workout. I’ve discovered what works for me time wise isn’t the most efficient body-wise. A mid afternoon workout is my best scheduled time but it is in the morning that my body co-operates the best.

I’ve analyzed my routine and found that short bursts of aerobic exercise between weights gives me maximum benefits as well as breaking up the “sameness” of it all.

The biggest obstacle that I have been working on is keeping my energy level up throughout the entire workout. After all, what is a workout if it’s not working out?

I’ve always had a healthy and hearty breakfast and followed fitness advice to drink plenty of fluids (16 – 20 oz) a couple of hours before my workout. However, I found that 30 minutes into the workout my energy level went way down. It wasn’t just tiredness either.

I even experimented with a little snack of fruit about 30 minutes before to keep my blood sugar levels up. This helped a little.

Should You Refinance Your Mortgage Now?

Many homeowners are considering taking advantage of today’s historically low interest rates by refinancing their mortgage. In many cases, they are able to save hundreds of dollars per month by refinancing. Whether mortgage refinancing makes sense for you can be easily determined by doing some simple math.

The first consideration is how much lower your new interest rate should be than your current rate. There is a common belief that if current rates are more than 1.5 to 2 percentage points lower than your current rate, then you should refinance. That’s a good starting point, but there is more to the story than just the raw interest rate.

Your real concern should be the total cost of the mortgage refinance both in the short term and the long term. The total cost includes not only the monthly mortgage payment (principal plus interest), but the closing costs, as well. Closing costs typically include such things as:

• Appraisal fee
• Credit Report fee
• Processing fee
• Commitment fee
• Tax Service fee
• Flood Certification fee
• Discount points (if any)
• Title Insurance (based on mortgage amount)
• Recording/Notary fee
• Per diem Interest
• Real Estate Taxes
• Home Insurance (percentage of mortgage amount)

Adding all these up can easily run into several thousand dollars, even without discount points. This is money that must be paid at the loan closing. In the case of a mortgage refinancing, lenders often advertise “no closing costs”, which is a bit misleading. The truth is that there ARE closing costs, but they are paid out of the proceeds of the loan rather than the pocket of the homeowner. This is possible when the homeowner borrows against the equity in their home as part of the refinancing.

As an example, let’s say that your home is worth $175,000. Your original mortgage was for $125,000 over 30 years at 7% interest. You still owe $100,000 on the original mortgage. The closing costs for your refinance are $3,000. If you simply refinance the $100,000 amount at a lower interest rate you will reduce your monthly payments, but you will have to pay the $3,000 closing costs out of your own pocket. If you choose the “no closing costs” option, your $3,000 closing costs will be paid by simply borrowing the additional money against the equity in your home (i.e. the value of your home less the amount owed). Your mortgage will now be for $103,000 instead of $100,000.

So, what about that widely held 2 percentage points belief we mentioned earlier? The monthly payment for a 30-year $125,000 mortgage at 7% interest is $831.63. For your new 30-year $100,000 loan at 5% interest, the monthly payment is $536.82, a savings of almost $300 per month. If the new mortgage is $103,000, the monthly payment is $552.93, still saving you over $275 per month. In this scenario, considering only the monthly savings, you would recoup your closing costs in as little as 10 months.

Sounds great, right? Well, there’s another factor you need to consider. If your original mortgage was $125,000, you’ve been paying on it for 152 months to get the principal balance down to $100,000. Therefore, you have 208 months left before the mortgage is paid off under the original terms. If you continue without refinancing, you’ll pay an additional $172,978 (208 months at $831.63 per month).

If you refinance your mortgage for the $100,000 you currently owe, you’ll pay on it for 360 months at $536.82 plus the $3,000 closing costs for a total of $196,255.

In this case, by refinancing you will end up paying an additional $23,277 for the new loan over the original mortgage. This works out to about $775 per year, which may be acceptable to you in order to have the lower monthly payment now. Kanturk Castle, County Cork Ireland - So The Story Goes

“A man’s home is his castle…” so the saying affirms. Sadly in this case, it turns out that Kanturk Castle, Co. Cork, Ireland never became a place of living. However, what did get designed was and is magnificent. The main building is made up of four story, while each tower stands up to 5 story.

Now as you ramble around this great old building, it’s hard to believe that it was raised in about 1601. 4 centuries are over and it is still holding strong. ‘Bualadh bos’ to the stonemasons. (Bualadh bos is Irish/Gaelic for applause or praise) Legend says that sEven stonemasons all named John worked on the Castle. Hence at one time the Castle was called as “Carrig-na-Shane-Saor” i.e. The Rock of John the Mason.

There are several points of view on whom exactly the castle was constructed for. Some think it was MacDonogh MacCarthy, while others feel it was Dermot McOwen. Even the dating of the monument cannot be agreed upon. usually it is known to be late 16th century early 17th century.

Why was it that he never lived in it? Well, there is some more to that adage: ‘A man’s home is his castle …, yet that is, ‘until the Queen arrives’. The neighbors of Kanturk Castle were becoming a bit concerned about the hugeness of this building and to the reasons of its purpose. The Privy Council, which was like close advisors to the Queen of England at the time, was informed and ordered the work on the structure to stop. Thus, ‘A man’s home is his castle until the queen arrives’.

So disappointed the overlord was, it’s reported that he shattered the leaded glass and the tiles and flung them into the river.

Down through time after that the property changed ownership numerous times. Now it is managed by An Taisce - The National Trust for Ireland, since 14th July 2000.

A very important point which is often ignored, is the ends; the side-pieces in particular, which are usually left in a clubbed condition, and therefore are never finished gracefully and neatly. After adjusting the parting, sprinkle or spray the hair with a good setting lotion. Some operators are of the opinion that the lotion helps to set the hair better and more easily. Do not wait for the emergency to happen before you start putting together tools and remedies or to start reading “how to do it” manuals.
