The fish came along like a log when I applied pressure and edged him toward the boat.

Puzzled and disappointed, I turned to the guide. “Is there something in these waters that makes the fish dopey,” I asked, “or is it the hot weather?”

I had an inkling of what was passing through that Floridian’s mind when, a second or two later, the redfish came abreast of the skiff, took one look at it, and suddenly woke up. He made a wild roll, went into a convulsion, and zoomed off. The tip of my rod whipped the water, and the reel handle spun wildly and gave my knuckles a bruising wallop.

Once his first great burst of speed was over, the redfish took to the bottom, shifted into low gear, and put up a dogged, tugging fight. He shook his head, rolled, twisted, and bored into the bottom. He used every trick in his book to throw the hook by rubbing his snout back and forth in the mud, twisting it in the grass, and scraping it against roots. And he forced me to use plenty of my own tricks before I was able to lead him back to where the fireworks had begun. I soon learned that this was only the beginning, for he fish made three more mud-plowing, grass shearing dashes before he was safely in the net. He weighed 16 lb., a good specimen for these waters.

“I knew you’d hooked a bundle of dynamite,” the guide chuckled. “Almost every red that holds his punches till he’s close to the boat puts up a tough fight. There’s only one rule that holds for reds-they’re never whipped till they’re boated.”

Jeff and I stayed in that strecth of water for nearly two hours, and between us we hooked and landed 26 redfish. Because their rough, bottom-boring tactics raised havoc with our expensive tarpon plugs, we changed to small wobbling spoons and shiny metal squids. The squids produced best.

A few days later, Jeff and I went streamer-fly fishing for reds in the shallow waters and flats around the keys. This method of fishing is similar to stalking game. You first find a fish, or a school. Then, as the guide poles the skiff quietly, you cast your fly to within a few feet of either side of the quarry, and strip in line slowly. Just as in plugging, you have to strike reds slowly. I found myself pulling flies right out of their mouths before I caught on to the timing.

Often a redfish you’re stalking will spot you, move off several yards, and hide in the grass. If there aren’t any other fish in sight, the guide will pole after him, keeping on course by the wake the fish throws in the shallows. The trick then is to try and mark him well enough so that one of your casts will find him. Sometimes a fish that hasn’t been too badly frightened can be persuaded to hit by casting a fly ahead of him. Before moving elsewhere, it pays to cover thoroughly every area in which you suspect a red may be hiding. Twice I was ready to give up and was retrieving line when, within a dozen yards of the boat, a fish appeared and grabbed the streamer.

When taken on a 4 to 6-oz. fly rod, a redfish puts up quite a struggle. His only fault, so far as I’m concerned, is that he doesn’t jump on walk on his tail. His run isn’t as long as that of a striped bass, but his infighting is more determined and vicious. You can whip and exhaust a striper and turn him on his side in the time it takes a red to get his second wind.

Once I had two unusually pugnacious reds almost within reach only to have them zoom off, toss their heads, cloud the bottom mud, and end up by twisting in a patch of grass with such determination that their tails rose vertically. I caught one of them off balance and threw him into a complete somersault.

Although redfish weighting 30 or 40 lb. have been taken in Florida’s Apalachee Bay and in scattered sections of the Gulf of Mexico, specimens as big as those landed in the fabulous surf-fishing grounds off Virginia and the Carolinas are rare. Gulf channel bass are more likely to average between 5 and 20 lb. No one knows why. Some theorize that when reds get to be around 25 or 30 lb. , they leave the inlets, bayous, canals, river estuaries, tidal flats, and other coastal areas for deeper water.

Few fishermen native to regions below Cape Hatteras feel cheated because their reds aren’t jumbos. What the fish may lack in size they make up for in numbers. And when caught on light tackle, they provide all the fireworks any reasonable man could want. The smaller fish, moreover, make better eating. Texas has a law which forbids keeping big reds. It’s a conservation measure. The big ones, the state’s fishing authorities contend, are the breeders and are needed to replenish the supply.

Many Texans consider the channel bass second only to the red snapper as a baking fish. They fish for reds in bayous and open coastal waters, and they like to use natural baits and to fish on bottom with boat rods, bait-casters, and long, cane poles. Some Lone Star anglers make a practice of trolling strip baits around outer bars, cuts, and rips, and quite a few catch them with bobbers during the spotted weakfish runs. Baits are rated in this order: sand crabs, shrimps, and mullet. The use of artificial lures hasn’t taken hold as strongly in Texas as it has in Florida.

Some of the most popular and productive grounds in Texas are located in the area which takes in Houston, Galveston, Port Arthur, and Beaumont. This district contains fish-wealthy bayous, the Intracoastal Canal, accessible piers, as well as open water on the gulf. Boats can be rented, and bait and tackle are available. Gulf winds exert a great influence on fishing for reds in the more open waters of Texas. Onshore winds are the best, for they blow warm water to the beaches and bring the schools in close. Though fishing from shore is good at this time, it’s even better from boat to shore. Redfish in Texas, as elsewhere, show a preference for baits drawn slowly from shallow to deep water.

Whether you catch redfish with natural baits or artificial lures, with bait-casters, fly rods, or boat rods, from boat or shore, or in bay, bayou, or the shore front, they provide sport of the highest caliber between October and March. And those are the months when sport fishing declines in northern latitudes. Reds are the South’s answer to the North’s schooling striper.

Aside from loneliness, the huge bulk of dog barking training issues develop from separation anxiety. The truth is, most dogs stop their relentless barking when they’re with their owners. Of course, it’s unrealistic to expect you to remain with your dog Twenty-four hours a day, so how should you ‘tackle’ a dog that barks the whole time whenever you go somewhere?

There are several dog barking training methods, starting at dog crate training but the one that seems to work most successfully is the method that cures the dog’s separation anxiety, and not just the barking. If you have a dog who tends to ‘deafen’ the neighbourhood when left alone, commence your training session by doing everything you’d normally do before going out the door-find your keys, find your coat, pick up your briefcase, and so on. Then reassure you dog, saying “I won’t be long.”, “I’ll be right back.”

Then, leave the house for one minute, come back home and put away all of your items, as though you’ve just come home from work. Give your dog a friendly stroke and congratulate him. Then, repeat the entire process, but this time leave the house for a slightly longer period (maybe three minutes). Repeat this process of going and returning until you can leave for a full fifteen minutes without any case of dog barking. Working with your dog in this manner will show him that you’re going to return whenever you leave the house, thus allaying the fear that causes him to bark when you’re away.

Can it truly be this easy??

No problem barker should ever be viewed as a ‘hopeless case’. Quick-fixes such as screaming at the dog, ‘conditioning’ it with a shock collar, or drenching it with water are just that….’quick-fixes’ that fail to address the real problem. A direct mail campaign is often the most cost effective way to reach many potential donors. Sending letters also is a simple way to raise money. There is no need to recruit, train, manage and motivate a large team. A few talented individuals can run the entire operation. And you will find you will get a lot more volunteers to fold and stuff envelopes than to cold-call potential contributors. That’s not to say all one must do is write a letter, post or e-mail it, and wait for the returns.

What makes mail solicitations difficult is that they are one-sided. No allowance exists for a campaign worker to personally motivate prospects. The most enthusiastic letter simply cannot match the conversation between a skilled fundraiser and an open-minded potential supporter. Lacking aggressive salesmanship, only minimum gifts can be expected, no matter how well written the solicitation letter and enclosures may be.

Here’s another angle to think about. Assume that I’m a small-donation prospect with some interest in your cause. There’s a good chance that I’ll donate generously to your appeal if you knock on my door or phone because your enthusiasm and presentation will be hard to resist. And how many other organisations will solicit me in these ways? Very few. But send me a solicitation letter and you place your request in the midst of enormous competition for my same donation dollar. And because it’s a letter, I have little problem withstanding its impersonal nature. If your organisation is not among my very favorites, you won’t receive a contribution of any consequence.

You see, although I think highly of your organisation, I have a desk covered with fundraising letters, from the best known national charities to all sorts of noteworthy school and local groups. I am saturated with mail appeals. After sorting through them and making my top-ranked selections, I find my charitable budget is about depleted. But I still care about your cause, so here’s two dollars to show you my heart’s in the right place.

With these factors as a downside, letter solicitations produce highly profitable income derived from small-gifts for organizations that plan and carry out meticulous programs. However, first-class mailing programs get extremely involved, both creatively and from a marketing standpoint. There are six elements to understand before considering a direct mail campaign:

1. Fundraising by mail is an ongoing component of annual fundraising programs. In capital campaigning, letter writing is a tool for wrapping up an appeal and giving thanks.

2. Ongoing mail appeals focus equally on retaining and upgrading present contributors while discovering and cultivating new prospects to make up for donors lost to attrition and to enlarge the donor pool. Present givers won’t always be an available source of funding.

3. Donors via mail don’t come free. Depending on the package, to obtain a new contributor, you can spend from $1.30 to $1.60 (or more) for each initial dollar raised from that person.

4. Mail programs are long-term propositions and instant financial rewards are unusual.

5. Be clear who you designate as a donor and who you label a prospect. Donors are people currently contributing to your charity. Someone who gave you a gift two years ago or a person who once contributed a painting to your auction are prospects, not donors. Get used to thinking of three distinct groups: current donors, past donor prospects, and new prospects.

6. Some prospects have more interest in and knowledge about an organisation than others. Cultivated potential donors are first approached because they represent the highest rate of return. For instance, a past donor prospect is a better bet to send you a new donation than someone who once came to a special event that you held. The person who came to the special event is more likely to fund you than someone who never heard of your group.

In planning a full scale mail campaign, don’t lose sight of the fundamental fundraising requirements. Make sure your project has compelling goals, high visibility, specific, attractive, and timely needs.

Additionally, make sure your group has start-up funds on hand for what can become a relatively large investment to get the program rolling. For example, depending on the scale of your operation, you might want to engage a letter shop or mail house to provide the many functions necessary to get your direct mail package to recipients. This is an expensive proposition.

Or you might opt to subscribe to an online software provider to help drive your mail program. Since the highest percentage of return comes from current contributors, they are the first group to target. If a goal is reachable by only contacting these people, expenses will be minimal and your problems will be solved. If that’s not realistic, additional prospects who might fund your project would need to be reached. That’s fine so long as you realize that their percentage of return will be far less than supporters.

For instance, you send a letter to current donors and perhaps {30|40|50} percent of them respond with {donations|gifts}. A letter sent to brand-new {potential donors|prospects} typically yields responses of around 0.5 percent to 2 percent. Until you’ve won over a new potential {donor|giver}, don’t expect relatively large {donations|contributions}. A return of 5 percent to 12 percent can be expected from present donors.

Working from home is becoming increasingly popular. I work from home and I adore it. I don’t think I could ever work at a factory again, but I must face the possibility that I may have to move my enterprise into commercial premises if it keeps growing like it has in the last few years. Even if parts of my business get relocated, I’ll try to stay there myself as much as I can.

Times are changing and working from home, particularly for the self-employed or contract workers is becoming more common. It is pointless paying rent for commercial premises if they are not necessary. Working from home has many perks.

You can work back late without getting into strife with your family. You can “drop into the office” anytime you like. You can get up really early if the mood takes you and put in a few hours work then go back to bed. But as a marketing consultant, there is one feature I really like, all the tax benefits!

You can claim some of your household expenses on your tax return. Based on the floor area used for business purposes, you can claim a portion of your mortgage interest, insurance, rates, water, electricity, maintenance and the bulk of your telephone bill as well as depreciation on the carpets, curtains, business furniture and so on. At the end of the financial year you will be surprised by the list of deductions.

You will also save on travel costs, wear and tear on your car and more importantly wear and tear on you, having not to deal with peak hour or public transport. Not to mention picking up approximately an extra one to two hours per day of work when you don’t have to travel.

There is a downside to working from home. The first problem is family distractions. Kids home from school at three o’clock, a friend at the front door, phone calls for other members of the family.

You also may not have the perfect workspace, or space may be limited. Work space is vitally important, you must have an area set aside purely for business, nothing else, just business. I have found that it’s best also if you can close the door on the weekends and at the end of the day so you can “leave work”.

I think many of the perceptions of people that working from home is “unprofessional” have lapsed into history. The number of major companies that allow their workers to work from home via computers has increased enormously in recent years. “Outsourcing” has become a commonly used term and this has brought about a spate of self-employed former employees, most of them working from home.

The other problem that many people working from home suffer is motivation and discipline. You must start work everyday just as you would if you were employed by someone else.
